PORT Adelaide star Robbie Gray faces a nervous wait ahead of Monday's match review findings after collecting Eagle Jeremy McGovern with a high bump during the first quarter of Sunday's JLT Community Series clash.

McGovern was forced from the field after Gray's right shoulder knocked him to the ground late in the first term.

The star Eagle remained on the bench as the players returned for the second quarter and didn't come back onto the field before half-time.

McGovern was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the match, with the All Australian taking his boots off while he sat on the interchange.

If Gray is cited by new match review officer Michael Christian, the Power star faces the prospect of being suspended for round one against Fremantle.

Port coach Ken Hinkley defended Gray as a ball player but conceded it was a worry having arguably his most valuable player in doubt for the season-opener.

However, Hinkley alluded to the collision being similar to the clash between Richmond captain Trent Cotchin and Giants star Dylan Shiel during the preliminary final, with Cotchin later cleared of any wrongdoing.

"Obviously I haven't seen much of it. It looked like both boys came together at the same time, so I'll wait and see what the vision looks like," Hinkley said post-match.

"Robbie's not that sort of player. They were both going at the ball pretty well.

"I think I've seen one late last year in a contest in a final. You go hard at the ball.

"It's always a concern if you've got any player in doubt – you don't want that.

"We don't want any player not available for round one."

Eagles coach Adam Simpson wasn't sure if McGovern would be available for Sunday's practice match against Fremantle at Domain Stadium, but the intercept-marking star had been keen to play on against Port.

"I think we all saw it. We didn't want to take a risk. He was pretty keen to play," Simpson said.

"We'll have to do all the testing that needs to be done, but he was pretty coherent.

"He was giving a fair few instructions on the bench, so he looked pretty sharp to me."
