HAWTHORN will be without critical small forwards Cyril Rioli and Paul Puopolo for up to the next six weeks after both suffered leg injuries in the win over Melbourne on Sunday.

Rioli has what the club is calling a moderate medial ligament strain in the same knee where he suffered a season-ending PCL injury in 2017.

He is expected to miss the next five to six weeks.

Puopolo appeared to suffer a major hamstring injury but has at least avoided surgery.

"He’s probably pulled up a fraction better than we thought he would have," Hawks high performance manager Andrew Russell told hawthornfc.com.au

"He’s got a decent hamstring strain and he’s going to miss four to six weeks."

It was a challenging afternoon for the Hawks on the medical front, despite the thumping win, but there is plenty of encouraging news as well.

Key defender James Frawley has pulled up well after missing the middle two quarters against the Demons because of a migraine and will be available to play against North Melbourne on Sunday.

Also in the selection mix for the weekend is forward Ryan Schoenmakers who is back in full training after missing two weeks with Achilles soreness.

This weekend will almost certainly see ruckman Jon Ceglar play his first game of football of any description since an ACL injury in round 22, 2016. After fully recovering from the knee injury, he suffered a back complaint on the eve of the practice match circuit, but after a month of training he appears set to go.

"It’s good for him and us," said Russell.

Veteran Shaun Burgoyne is back training at 90 per cent capacity following a hamstring strain, but he is set to miss just one more match and should return against St Kilda on Saturday week.

Defender Grant Birchall is set to resume running next week as he recovers from more surgery on his troublesome PCL. The Hawks say he has regained strength in the knee and hope he will return to the side in the second half of the year.

Draftee Dylan Moore will miss a month with a shoulder injury as the curse of the No.36 jumper strikes again at Hawthorn.
