WEST Coast has secured the signature of free agent Jeremy McGovern on a five-year extension believed to be around $5m.

It's understood the 26-year-old put pen to paper in recent days, turning his back on significant interest from opposition clubs, led by crosstown rival Fremantle.

The new deal will take McGovern through until the age of 31 in 2023.

"It’s good news; I’m just stoked to be staying at the club," McGovern told westcoasteagles.com.au.

"I love the people at the club, the direction the club is taking and it’s exciting to be a part of that.

"I’m grateful for the opportunity the club has given me and it was a gut decision to extend my contract. It would have been nice to have locked it away a bit earlier, but these things take time.

"I’m pleased it is done and now I can focus on the rest of the season. Hopefully my decision puts a few West Coast fans at ease."

McGovern had initally delayed talks until the end of the season but it's understood a fresh offer in recent weeks led to a quicker resolution.

With partner Madi giving birth to the couple's first child in May and business interests in Western Australia, McGovern looks set to finish his career at the Eagles.

The Eagles are understood to be considering a deal to make fellow free agent Andrew Gaff an Eagle for life, while the signature of ruckman Scott Lycett also looms as crucial after another serious knee injury to star big man Nic Naitanui.
