GREATER Western Sydney midfielder Jacob Hopper has failed in his bid to be cleared of a fine for making careless contact with an umpire.

He was slapped with an increased financial sanction of $4000 by the AFL Tribunal as a result.

Hopper argued his contact wasn't careless, saying he was goalside of Carlton midfielder Patrick Cripps and had no choice but to collide with umpire Leigh Fisher during Sunday's match at Etihad Stadium.

But the Tribunal deliberated for around 15 minutes before finding him guilty.

Hopper had the option of accepting a $2500 penalty if he didn't challenge.
