THE WESTERN Bulldogs are mourning the death of premiership player and Brownlow medallist, Peter Box.

Box, 86, died surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday.

Box played 107 games over six seasons between 1951 and 1957, missing the 1952 season after a serious motorcycle accident.

He is the only Bulldog to win a premiership, Brownlow Medal and best-and-fairest award.

"Peter's career was relatively short in duration but his impact on our club was significant," cub president Peter Gordon said.

"He wasn't tall but held down the centre half-forward position in the 1954 premiership team with distinction, and within two years was a Brownlow medallist."

Recruited from Cheltenham, Box impressed early in his career winning Footscray's Most Consistent and Best First Year Player award in 1952, before winning the Brownlow in 1956.

Box was inducted into the Western Bulldogs Hall of Fame in March, 2018.
