CARLTON has secured a deal for Greater Western Sydney midfielder Will Setterfield.

The Blues sent their future second-round pick as well as pick No.43 in this year's NAB AFL Draft to GWS, in exchange for the 190cm on-baller and pick No.71.

Carlton made GWS match a bid for Setterfield at pick No.5 in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft, but has finally secured its man two years later.

List boss Stephen Silvagni said that Setterfield was a player the Blues had monitored since he escaped from their grasp at the draft.

"We kept a close eye on Will during the under-18 competitions and rated him really highly heading into the 2016 Draft, so we're rapt he'll pull on the navy blue next year," Silvagni said.

"Securing Will strengthens our midfield and at 20 years old, although he's a bit younger in terms of the age bracket we are targeting, he's an excellent talent who will grow and learn alongside Patrick Cripps, Marc Murphy, Paddy Dow and Zac Fisher.

"Unfortunately, in his first two years of senior footy he's had a tough run with injury, but with the addition of Andrew Russell to our high-performance team, we're confident we'll be able to get his body right and tailor a fitness program for him.

"I'd like to thank the Giants for their cooperation throughout the process. We understood that Will had another two years left to run on his contract, so we're pleased GWS were open to reaching a deal that benefitted both clubs."

Setterfield, 20, played just two matches for the Giants in his first two seasons at the club due to a number of injury setbacks, including a pre-season ACL tear that wiped out all of 2018.

"We wish Will all the best for the future and thank him for contribution over his two years at the Giants," Giants list manager Jason McCartney said.

"Will requested to explore his options and receiving a third-round pick this year and a future second-round pick will help us bring in more young talent to continue to build our list for long-term success.
