CARLTON may have a tough task hanging onto promising ruckman Sam Jacobs who is open to the idea of a return to his home state of South Australia.

Jacobs, who is out of contract with the Blues, played arguably the best match of his young career in his side’s elimination final loss to the Sydney Swans last Sunday.

The 22-year-old played 13 matches this season for a career total of 17.

However the Blues already have a bulk of talented big men, with Matthew Kreuzer, Robbie Warnock and Shaun Hampson all tied to the club.

Because of this, Jacobs, despite being on the rise and enjoying his time at Carlton, might look elsewhere in search of greater opportunity.

“We’re just working through contract negotiations with Carlton at the moment,” manager Craig Vozzo told afl.com.au.

“I suspect it’ll take a few more weeks. We’ve got to get a bit of a feel for what the club wants to do.

“He’s happy at Carlton but he’s a South Australian lad ... if an opportunity presents, you know, he hasn’t ruled that out.”

Both the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide are likely to look at bolstering their big-man departments ahead of 2011.

The Crows may lose Jonathon Griffin, who wants to return to Western Australia - potentially leaving them with only Ivan Maric and Brad Moran to shoulder the ruck duties.

The Power has veteran Dean Brogan, while youngsters Matthew Lobbe, Jarrad Redden and Jackson Trengove can also fill the void.

But Jacobs, whose 44-hit-out performance against Swans pair Shane Mumford and Mike Pyke helped get his side back into its elimination final, is ready to play.

And the Blues are eager to retain his services.

“We’ve made an offer to Sam and his management,” Carlton football manager Steven Icke said.

“They’ve received our offer, we’ve spoken and we’re in discussions. He’s a required player at this football club and we’re hoping to finalise those negotiations in the next week or so.”
