Melbourne's Jack Trengove received a three-week suspension from the AFL tribunal

MELBOURNE players have taken to Twitter to voice their displeasure at the three-match ban handed to teammate Jack Trengove by the AFL tribunal on Tuesday night.

Trengove, 19, was cited by the match review panel for his tackle on Patrick Dangerfield during the third quarter of Sunday's match that saw the Adelaide player substituted out of the contest with concussion after hitting his head on the MCG turf.

The MRP ruled the tackle constituted negligent conduct, high impact and high contact for a total of 325 demerit points and a three-game suspension.

Trengove could have reduced that sanction to two matches with an early plea, but chose to contest the panel's finding.

The Demons called expert witnesses Kelly O'Donnell, the club's tackling coach, and bio-mechanist Dr Kevin Ball as part of their case for the dismissal of the rough conduct charge with both declaring Trengove's technique was sound.

But tribunal counsel Andrew Tinney SC argued that by grabbing Dangerfield's arm and keeping hold of it throughout the tackle Trengove had not exercised his duty of care to his fellow player's safety.

Tribunal members Emmett Dunne, Wayne Henwood and Wayne Schimmelbusch dismissed the Melbourne legal team's challenge leading to the outpouring of sympathy from Trengove's teammates.

"A 3 week punishment for a tackle, which is part of our game, is too much considering other more frowned upon offences get less punishment," wrote Cale Morton.

"They couldn't have let both Richards and Trengove off! No way - what would everyone have thought? Maybe that they do still have common sense," he added soon after, referring to the case of Sydney Swans defender Ted Richards who successfully challenged his rough conduct charge.

"Hmmm need some clarity, duty of care?" tweeted Nathan Jones.

"So If a tackle is laid in future & the unfortunate incident is to occur that a player does a knee or shoulder as a result of that tackle, does that mean I get 3 weeks? Does this mean the tackle is dead? Please explain..."

Melbourne defender James Frawley and skipper Brad Green also made their feelings on the tribunal's decision known.

"I thought my mate played for the Melbourne Demons ... not the Melbourne Vixens!" wrote Frawley.

"Duty of care? It was the perfect tackle," tweeted Green.

Frawley deleted the post shortly after, possibly fearing a punishment similar to Richmond's Daniel Jackson.

Jackson was forced to apologise earlier in the year after criticising the match review panel on his Facebook page.

Colin Sylvia, Matthew Bate and Luke Tapscott, who accepted a reprimand from the MRP last week for his bump on West Coast's Mark Nicoski, also expressed their disbelief at the finding and confusion over the rules concerning tackling.

"Can not believe it. Shattering for him & the team! I'm scared to tackle now," Sylvia tweeted.

Even Carlton forward Mitch Robinson threw in his two cents with the Carlton forward sharing the views of his rivals.

"Punishing blokes for tackling which has been apart of the game since it was established? 2012 NAB Cup rule...touch footy play on!" Robinson tweeted.

Trengove, the second player taken overall at the 2009 NAB AFL Draft, will miss games against North Melbourne, St Kilda and Carlton after his unsuccessful visit to the tribunal.

The onballer used his own Twitter account to thank his teammates for their public show of support.

"Shattered...Thanks for all of the support everyone, much appreciated. Let's just smash the Roo's," he said.

The ban handed to Trengove wasn't the only disappointing aspect of the 96-point win over Adelaide with ruckman Mark Jamar suffering a posterior cruciate ligament injury that will sideline him for approximately four weeks.
