The AFL/Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) Combined Level One Sports Trainers and Sports First Aid Course introduces the basic skills required for Sports Trainers. The course, which is administered by SMA, commences Sunday 8th October 2006 at Malvern Sports and Physiotherapy Centre.

The course offers the opportunity to become a SMA nationally accredited Sports Trainer and includes:

  • Roles & Responsibilities of the Level 1 Sports Trainer
  • Structure & Function of the Musculo Skeletal System (Anatomy)
  • Warm-Up/Stretching/Cool-down
  • Immediate Assessment, Management & Referral of Sports Injuries (STOP, TOTAPS, RICE regime)
  • Management of Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Ankle, Thumb & Finger Taping
  • Advanced Taping
  • Medical Conditions
  • Nutrition
  • Crisis Management (C.P.R)
  • Fracture Management
  • Transport of the Injured Athlete
  • Control of External Bleeding

Skin Injuries & Infectious diseases Course participants receive a course manual and materials. On successful completion of the program you will receive an SMA/AFL certificate, SMA I.D Card, be nationally accredited for three years and also receive complimentary state and national newsletters.


Course information and an application form in PDF format can be downloaded from above. The numbers accepted into the course will be limited to a maximum of 60 participants to ensure quality delivery of the practical components. Enrolments will be accepted on a first come, first served basis and payment must accompany enrolment to ensure a place in the course.
