NEWLY-crowned Port Adelaide captain Domenic Cassisi couldn't have asked for a better outcome from his debut match at the helm of the side.
In Cassisi's first official game as skipper after taking the reins from Warren Tredrea two weeks ago, the Power put in a commanding performance thumping the Sydney Swans by 65 points at Manuka Oval on Sunday.
The 26-year-old was rapt to lead his side into the second round of the NAB Cup after overcoming the initial excitement of the coin toss.
"It's been a long summer for us, not making the finals, and we made a point of it earlier in the week that we wanted to have a good week on the track and come out and win today," Cassisi said after the game.
"It was exciting before the game, and to wear the No.1 in a proper game is a great honour.
"The last two weeks have been busy since it got announced but it's really sunk in now.
"It's something you take pride in and more importantly, we won and that's what's important."
Cassisi said while he still has a lot to learn about being captain, he already knows he wants to share the responsibility evenly with his peers.
"With clubs these days, it's more about the leadership group so we just wanted to make sure that we brought to the group what we're individually good at," he said.
"We didn't really want to change too much.
"The captain is really in charge of the stuff off the field and gets to toss the coin, but apart from that, you need more than one guy pushing what we're about and what we want to do."
The tenacious tagger was impressed by two of the club's debutants in Hamish Hartlett and Wade Thompson, after the pair caught eyes during the Manuka Oval game.
"Wade has been exciting since he started training with us. He's on our rookie list and really pushing to get on our senior list," he said.
"Hamish, who we picked up with our first pick in the draft, looked good today as well and we've got high hopes for him."
Cassisi was also buoyed by the Power’s early-season depth, with most players back from their end-of-season ailments.
"It's a good sign. We were happy with the way we played today and the things we wanted to work on over the summer came out, which was a positive," he said.
"We've still got some great players to come in – David Rodan and Shaun Burgoyne and some quality midfielders – so we still think we've got a lot of improvement left in us."
Dream Team watch – Domenic Cassisi scored 87 Toyota AFL Dream Team points in Port Adelaide’s win over the Swans in round one of the 2009 NAB Cup.
