WEST Coast coach John Worsfold says there is no pressure on boom recruit Nick Naitanui to play AFL football in the short-term after 20 players debuted in round one.

Brisbane’s NAB Rising Star nominee Daniel Rich ripped Saturday night’s game away from West Coast with 21 possessions, while Carlton’s Mitch Robinson booted three goals on debut.

Worsfold said Naitanui, the No.2 pick in last year’s NAB AFL Draft was still three to four weeks away from being considered for selection after undergoing pre-season knee surgery.

“There’s no pressure building on him. He’s in a rehab program and we’re in no rush,” Worsfold said from Subiaco Oval on Tuesday.

“We want him to be an exceptional player at this club for a long period of time. We’ll just take our time to get him absolutely fit and ready to play.

“He’s been doing some footy work, kicking stuff for a few weeks. He’ll probably build up slowly over the next three to four weeks and we’ll assess him.

“When the time is right, he will play.”

Worsfold said Rich was a different type of player to Naitanui and the players should be assessed over 10 to 12 year period.

He added that young Eagles Chris Masten and Brad Ebert, who both played in Saturday night's nine-point loss to the Brisbane Lions, were expected to develop into top-line players.

"Brad Ebert is going to improve over a long period of time," Worsfold said.

"I don't expect him to jump from being a young player with a dozen games of experience to all of a sudden become a match winner off his own boot.

"We've got players that will do it, I've got no doubt. I don't expect them to do it in their first year or two."

Adam Hunter, Brett Jones, Ben McKinley, and Adam Selwood all missed Saturday loss, but Worsfold expected all four to push for selection this week.

The coach said Jones was left out for team balance while 2008 leading goalkicker McKinley was not in the best 22.

He was hopeful Selwood would recover in time from minor knee surgery to face Port Adelaide on Sunday at Subiaco Oval, while Hunter may be back after kicking three goals for WAFL side Swan Districts.

"I've got to have a good chat to Adam about where he's at," said Worsfold.

"Obviously he had an outstanding game on the weekend. He's a top-liner so the only reason he wouldn't be in is if he didn't feel like his shoulder was quite right for AFL footy."

Hunter trained with the main group on Tuesday, as did Patrick McGinnity.

The 20-year-old will return to play for Claremont this weekend after suffering a broken jaw in the side's NAB Cup clash with Collingwood.
