ESSENDON midfielder Jason Winderlich says Saturday night's clash with Carlton will be a big test for the Bombers' young engine room.

The Bombers are missing Mark McVeigh, Andrew Welsh and Kyle Reimers from their starting line-up due to injury.

But in good news for footy fans, Winderlich said the contest was unlikely to become a tag-fest and that the two midfields were likely to go head-to-head.

"They've got some quality players in there – (Chris) Judd, (Marc) Murphy, (Bryce) Gibbs and (former Lion Richard) Hadley – Hadley's playing terrific football as well," he said after a light training session on Good Friday morning.

"But I think our midfield stood up well last week, so it's another great challenge for our group – Jobe (Watson) has been terrific in the first two rounds this year, Heath Hocking's been terrific as well.

"Andrew Lovett's got the main couple of tags the first two rounds and he's played really well against Carlton the last couple of times, so hopefully he can play well again, because he really sparks us up."

The 24-year-old, who has only recently recovered from two serious back operations, said tagging too many players sometimes created more problems that it hoped to solve.

"I think you can probably only tag one, because if you tag two or three, then they dictate the space too much around the stoppage and open it up for themselves.

"So I think we'll probably just tag the one player, and then let Jobe and Lovey do their work around there as well.

"Obviously it would be good if David Hille could give us first use around the ball, I think we can take advantage there – David's obviously a terrific player, our best-and-fairest last year – and if we can get first use around the stoppages then obviously that cuts them out.

"But they have some seasoned bodies in there in Judd and Hadley, but I think Jobe and Heath have proved they can hold their own as well."

Assistant coach Adrian Hickmott said that Carlton, for whom he played 134 games between 1996 and 2003, had clearly improved from last year.

 "There's no doubt they have – they're playing enthusiastic football and their attack on the ball and their defensive action in tackles and chases are right up there," he said at Windy Hill.

"Iit'll be an exciting game on the weekend against our enthusiastic young group also."

Hickmott said skipper Matthew Lloyd – who is yet to kick a goal this season – would spend some time in the goal square and some up the ground.

"I suppose you'll find he'll play high, but he'll go deep at some stage also.

"So as the game unfolds, and it depends on the play itself, we'll recognise where he'll be and where he'll play.

"But he and Scotty (Lucas) have had a ripper week on the track, and they've trained with great enthusiasm."
