ADELAIDE skipper Simon Goodwin will have to wait to play his 250th game after being ruled out of this Sunday's clash with North Melbourne at AAMI Stadium.

Goodwin, 32, injured his knee early in last weekend’s win over Essendon and initial fears were that he would miss two weeks.

However, that was downgraded to one week after scans revealed no structural damage, with Adelaide coach Neil Craig holding out some hope he might have been able to play this week.

This did not eventuate on Thursday when Goodwin failed a fitness test.

Midfielder Scott Thompson left the club’s first closed training session of the season early citing general soreness, but isn’t considered in any doubt.

North Melbourne kicked five goals to one in the first quarter against league leaders St Kilda last week.

The Roos still held a narrow lead at half time, but injuries derailed the brewing upset.

The visitors will be without captain Brent Harvey (elbow) and Daniel Wells (groin), but Craig said his side wouldn’t underestimate its opposition.

“I loved what I saw from North Melbourne’s first part of the game against St Kilda when they had a full team and we’re up and running - that’s pretty typical of what you’ll get from North Melbourne,” Craig said.

“Their spirit [is their biggest threat]. They’ve got a lot of new players coming through their football club, but they’re still playing with a great spirit.”

The Crows were equally as spirited in passages against the Bombers.

Craig was pleased with Adelaide’s ability to score 21 goals on the weekend, but said his side would need to be better defensively this week.

“We’ve got a lot of respect for North Melbourne and the way they can play and score. It’s going to be a really good game for us, a really good, competitive game.”
