COLLINGWOOD is awaiting scans on two promising forwards that were injured in the club’s VFL loss to Werribee on Saturday.

While Paul Medhurst made a successful return from an ankle complaint, Brent Macaffer and Sean Rusling both suffered injuries, Rusling's coming in his first match back after fracturing a cheekbone.

“It’s in his hip, thigh or buttock, somewhere in that region," Magpies football manager Geoff Walsh said of Rusling's injury on Monday morning.

"We’ll get a scan just to verify what the actual cause of the problem is."

While Macaffer landed awkwardly and hyper-extended a knee, Collingwood is optimistic the 21-year-old won’t spend any significant time out of the game.

“We don’t think there’s any major structural damage, but his knee’s swollen a little bit, so we’ll see what the scan shows," Walsh said.

Meanwhile, Medhurst played about 70 per cent of the clash and is a chance to return to senior football when Collingwood takes on the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

The Brisbane Lions will learn later this week just how long they will be without tough midfielder Troy Selwood after the 25-year-old dislocated his right shoulder against Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium on Sunday.

The Lions will scan Selwood’s shoulder to determine the damage before deciding the best method of treatment.

While his injury is a blow, it isn’t all bad news for Michael Voss’s team, which is on the rise after its 42-point win over the reigning premiers.

Following a week off, the Lions might have a selection headache before their next assignment – the round 13 match with Melbourne at the Gabba.

Up to five players will be available to come back into the senior line-up. Bradd Dalziell played his first match in almost two months at the weekend, while defenders Josh Drummond (calf), Daniel Merrett (ankle) and Joel Patfull (jaw) should all be fit to tackle the Demons.

Midfielder Travis Johnstone (back) was a late withdrawal at the weekend, and will also put his hand up for an instant recall.
