PORT Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin has agreed to the terms of a new three-year deal that will see him remain at Alberton until at least the end of 2012.

Chaplin, 23, has played 73 games with the Power since being taken with pick No.15 in the 2003 NAB AFL Draft.

The Victorian-born defender enjoyed a breakout season in 2007 and has since cemented his position at centre half-back.

Chaplin, who was part of the extended leadership group last year, has also been touted as a future captain of the club.

Football operations manager Peter Rohde said Chaplin was an important part of the club’s long-term future.

“With Troy and Alipate Carlile both signed up, we’ve got two key defenders to build our backline around long term,” Rohde said.

“Troy’s still got some areas to improve on, but he’s shown a great work ethic and we’re looking forward to him continuing his improvement here at Port Adelaide.

“Troy brings great character to the club and is an important part of the culture among our younger players here at the Power.”
