PORT Adelaide star Shaun Burgoyne's return to AFL football has been confirmed with Friday's announcement of round 17's final teams.

Burgoyne, 26, has been sidelined since round three with severe knee bone bruising that required surgery to repair the surface of the joint.

It was initially hoped he would miss between three and four weeks, but the injury has proved difficult to shake.

The important onballer was named on an extended bench on Thursday and survived the final cut to play Adelaide in Sunday's Showdown despite not gaining any match fitness via the SANFL.

Troy Chaplin also returns after serving his two-match ban for charging young Brisbane Lions midfielder Daniel Rich.

First-round draft pick Hamish Hartlett was named in the initial squad but drops back to the emergency list with Nick Salter and Matthew Broadbent, who were omitted from the team that defeated West Coast last week.

Adelaide welcomes back Nathan van Berlo and Robert Shirley from illness for the cross-town encounter.

Neither player was able to take the field against the Saints last week, but make quick returns in place of David Mackay (hamstring) and Richard Douglas (omitted).

Douglas is an emergency with Taylor Walker and Phil Davis.

Melbourne youngster Jordie McKenzie is one of seven changes to the Dees' side that will host the Swans in Canberra.

The former Geelong Falcon comes off the rookie list to make his AFL debut and is joined by Kyle Cheney, Paul Johnson, Brad Miller, Shane Valenti, Matthew Whelan and Michael Newton.

The Demons have lost nearly a third of the side defeated by the Cats last week with Brock McLean (knee), Mark Jamar (quad), Brad Green (scaphoid), Jack Grimes (back), James Frawley (back), Neville Jetta (flu) and Russell Robertson (omitted) all out.

The Sydney Swans have made four changes with Amon Buchanan, Jarred Moore, Mike Pyke and Kristin Thornton named on the bench.

Ted Richards won't play again this season after suffering four broken ribs in last week's loss to Carlton, while Patrick Veszpremi, Paul Bevan and Craig Bird have all been dropped back to the emergency list.

Essendon has dropped Sam Lonergan and Heath Hocking ahead of Sunday's clash with the Tigers at the MCG.

The duo was unseated by Nathan Lovett-Murray and Angus Monfries. Both omitted players are emergencies along with Hayden Skipworth.

Richmond has made four unforced changes as Jade Rawlings searches for the right combination to earn him his second win at the helm.

Nathan Brown, Trent Cotchin and Ben Cousins were all named in the starting 18 on Thursday, but Adam Pattison has also come in and will start on the bench.

Out of the side go Shane Tuck, Angus Graham, Mark Coughlan and Alex Rance with the latter pair joining Adam Thomson as emergencies.
