CHAD Cornes says there will be no love lost when Port Adelaide and Carlton go head-to-head chasing a finals berth at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.
The two sides have not played this season, but the Power are still smarting from the shock loss to the Blues at home in round 11 last year.
Port Adelaide led by 30 points at the final change, but watched Carlton slam on seven unanswered goals to snatch victory.
The Blues also got the points when the teams met in round 19, 2008 and Cornes said the Power, embarrassed by their performance against Fremantle last week, were keen for a big game.
"I like playing Carlton. There are a few players in the Carlton opposition that we’d like to get under their skin," Cornes said on Tuesday.
"They’ve had a great record against us recently. They beat us twice last year. Once when we were in front by a fair bit and they came back in one of the worst losses I’ve been involved with, so that’s in the back of my mind."
The number-one target for any potential niggling on Sunday will be Carlton spearhead Brendan Fevola.
Cornes and Fevola have been involved in several on-field scuffles over the past couple of years and the Power star has recently moved to defence.
"It is all a bit of fun and a bit of a media beat-up. I’ve never actually met Fev off the field. There’s been a bit of on field niggle, but that happens with lots of players in the AFL, so we’ll see what happens this week," Cornes said.
"I’ve been pretty happy with the move to defence. There are still some things I’ve got to work on like my positioning and when to run-off or clamp down on my man, but I feel more comfortable down there.
"My form wasn’t great and we just thought I could move back there to get a bit of stability in the side and consistency with my own form."
Cornes, who was named the All-Australian centre half-back in 2004, will start in defence on Sunday, but said the dream match-up on Fevola was unlikely to eventuate.
"Bobby [Alipate] Carlile has had a pretty good record against him [Fevola] and he’s one guy that can hold his head up pretty high this season," Cornes said.
"He’s shut down all the gun forwards and performed pretty well, so hopefully his form continues this week against Fev."
Cornes could only name two other players that could walk away from the Power’s topsy-turvy 2009 season with no regrets.
He said the club would have to make some tough calls on players at the end of the season as a result of the team’s inconsistent efforts.
"Dom Cassisi has really led from the front. He’s played the way a captain should and has been pretty inspirational," Cornes said.
"Jacob Surjan has done his bit down back and Tredders [Warren Tredrea] started the year really well. Kane has done some big jobs on gun players, so guys have had their patches.
"Pretty much everyone’s been up and down at some stage, but Dom and Surj are probably the two that have played well week-in and week-out."
