SUMMARY The Lions outscored the Western Bulldogs eight goals to five in the second half last weekend, but it wasn’t enough to derail the determined visitors and snatch their top-four spot.
Over in the city of churches the string holding together Port Adelaide’s yo-yo season well and truly snapped after the club went down to Carlton by nine goals.
The home side trailed by just seven points early in the final quarter, but were powerless to stop the Blues’ onslaught and succumbed to its sixth loss of over 50 points for the year.
Essendon’s upset win over league leaders St Kilda added salt to the Port Adelaide wounds and pushed Mark Williams’ men out of the eight with just two games to go.
The Power will be bolstered by the return of Daniel Motlop and must now win both of its remaining games and rely on other results to avoid missing the finals for a second straight year.
The Lions’ top-four chances appear shot, but a win on Saturday night will keep coach Michael Voss in the running for an all-important home final in his first year at the helm.
PLAYER TO WATCH Josh Drummond (Brisbane Lions) Drummond demonstrated his potential as the designated kicker against the Doggies. He was the last link in the Lions' handball chain on numerous occasions and finished off to perfection to record multiple goals (three) for just the fifth time in his 62-game career. Drummond’s creativity and raking kick is instrumental to the Lions’ defence, but the Port Adelaide forwards will now be wary of his forays down the field as well.
Chad Cornes (Port Adelaide) Cornes has been shifted to defence over the past month and is blossoming in the position in which he won All-Australian selection in 2004. Cornes’ role on Saturday night is likely to be plugging the hole in front of Daniel Bradshaw or Jonathan Brown and his ability to cut-off passes from the likes of Simon Black, Luke Power and Daniel Rich will go a long way towards a Port Adelaide win.
QUESTION MARKS Can Port Adelaide snap a seven-game losing streak on the road to keep its slim finals hopes alive? The Power have won three of the past four meetings between the two sides at the Gabba, but have managed just one win away from AAMI Stadium this season.
Can Vossy’s men rediscover peak form? The Lions looked menacing after the mid-season break winning four games from five starts, including a stirring victory over Geelong. But the boys from Brisbane have gone winless over the past three weeks and need to lift a notch approaching September.
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY The Power won easily when the two sides met at AAMI Stadium just seven weeks ago, but it’s hard to see the visitors replicating that effort. The Lions have been a tad off the boil in recent weeks, but the home ground advantage alone should be enough to see them record their 12th win of the season.
PREDICTION Brisbane Lions by 36 points
