Farren Ray at St Kilda training earlier this week
ST KILDA midfielder Farren Ray has issued a glowing endorsement for trade week by stating his 2008 move from Whitten Oval to Moorabbin reignited his passion for the game.
Ahead of his first Toyota AFL Grand Final, the 23-year-old believes players that feel their career has stalled should definitely consider a shift to a new club.
"Anyone who is thinking about getting traded, I can tell you it really does revive you," Ray said on Friday, as he took part in his new club's grand final parade.
"Different coaching methods, a fresh start, and also the Western Bulldogs had a lot of players my type and the Saints didn't have as many.
"It seemed to be a perfect fit."
Ray admitted it was difficult to fully comprehend the fact he was on the verge of playing in the most important game of the year, after disenchantment led him to seek a way out of Whitten Oval last season.
Ray, who will play his 100th AFL game on Saturday in the decider against Geelong, nominated St Kilda as his club of choice after he informed the Dogs of his intention to move last October.
While he admitted he sought Moorabbin as his new home owing to the direction the Saints were headed, he said he didn't envision a grand final berth this soon.
"I didn't think it would happen as quick," he said. "I knew St Kilda was a very good side, and I knew we were definitely going to challenge for a premiership.
"They made a prelim last year, and I just thought I could fit in and give them something they didn't have, which is hopefully what I've done this year.
"The next step was a grand final for them. They played in a few prelims over the last few years, so it's a well established group and I feel like I've fitted in and played a role."
While he has only been a Saint for a year, Ray says Saturday's result will mean as much to him had he been at the club for much longer.
"If we don't get the result tomorrow, I'll be a shattered man. I know a lot of players don't get to make a grand final, but I'm not there to make up numbers," he said.
"I'll be really shattered if we go down."
