CARLTON has once again unveiled a membership slogan that is sure to raise eyebrows among the football world.
After last year’s controversial ‘They Know We’re Coming’ message, the Blues have followed a similar theme with ‘Can You Smell What The Blues Are Cooking’ (sic).
The line is accompanied with an illustration of Chris Judd, Bryce Gibbs, Marc Murphy and Matthew Kreuzer standing around a premiership cup that is being used as a cooking pot with a magpie and a bomber inside.
CEO Greg Swann said the club was not afraid to be a little outrageous in its membership campaign.
“The 2009 slogan, 'They Know We’re Coming' was a little controversial and it not only got people talking it was a very successful campaign," Swann told carltonfc.com.au.
"It generated a great deal of media attention and was a real talking point in what was a record-breaking membership year for the club.
“For 2010 we wanted another slogan that would make people take notice, we wanted something different that hadn’t been done before,” Swann said.
The slogan has been used to great effect by professional wrestler The Rock, who has become famous for his catchcry ‘Can You Smell What The Rock Is Cooking?’
The Blues CEO said the club had deliberately featured its two main rivals in the slogan.
“Adding the magpie and bomber in the cup adds a little extra spice to the slogan. Let’s hope it gets people talking and more importantly reminds Carlton supporters to join as members in 2010,” Swann added.
The Blues were widely criticised for last year’s slogan which was often used sarcastically by other clubs. But Swann said it was justified as the club reached more than 43,000 members for the first time.
“In the end the team really lived up to the membership slogan last year as we continued our improvement and played our first final in eight years,” he said.
“With an exciting young list and the experience of a final we believe people not only know we are coming but are now well aware of what we are preparing.”
