Saints cut Leigh Fisher, Ball gone

By Mic Cullen 3:25 PM Fri 13 Nov, 2009
ST KILDA has given itself four picks in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft, with their official second list lodgement confirming the departure of former skipper Luke Ball and the delisting of defender Leigh Fisher.

The Saints have picks 32 and 60, with the lower picks yet to be confirmed as they are dependent on what other clubs do.

The club has officially delisted Ball, after his decision earlier this week to put himself into the draft, Fisher has been told he is no longer required, and Brad Howard has been delisted from the rookie list.

They join Max Hudghton (retired), Matt Maguire (delisted), Jarryd Allen (delisted - injury), Colm Begley (delisted - returned to Ireland), Eljay Connors (delisted) and Xavier Clarke (traded to Brisbane for pick 60).

The club gained speedster Andrew Lovett from Essendon for pick 16 and Brett Peake from Fremantle for pick 48.

Zac Dawson and Luke Miles have been elevated from the rookie list to the senior list, while newly recruited Irishman Tommy Walsh joins the Saints as an international rookie.

The 25-year-old Fisher played 55 games for the Saints after being taken with pick 46 in the 2002 draft, but battled shocking hamstring problems throughout his career.

With their first draft pick at the tail-end of the second round, the Saints are believed to be looking to simply pick the best available player rather than looking at a needs-based selection.
