ANDREW Lovett's career at St Kilda has begun in disastrous fashion with the new recruit arrested for being drunk in a public place in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

The former Bomber had been celebrating his 27th birthday with friends.

He will now wait while his new club conducts an internal investigation before deciding on its punishment.

Lovett was targeted by the Saints for his unquestionable football ability and sizzling pace.

However, he did come to Moorabbin with behavioural baggage, being twice suspended during the 2008 season for off-field indiscretions.

St Kilda released a statement on Monday night confirming Lovett's arrest and charge, and expressed its regret at the situation.

"The St Kilda Football club is extremely disappointed that Andrew has put himself in this position," the statement read.

"The club is fully investigating what has taken place and will take appropriate action if and when required."

Lovett said at the time of being traded that the promise of premiership glory was what had lured him to the Saints.

He also expressed a desire to put his past behind when starting with the new club.

"The opportunity to start afresh at a different place [was appealing] but I thought I could do that here at a different club and start here on a clean slate," he said.

"I’m looking forward to the opportunity and a chance to play in a great side."
