MELBOURNE'S live selections in the NAB AFL Draft are picks one, two, 11, 18, 34, 50 and 66. Who are the best players chosen in those spots in the history of the draft?
1
NICK RIEWOLDT (ST KILDA - 2000)
Riewoldt, with five club champion awards and four All-Australian nominations, remains the best, ahead of Luke Hodge (Hawthorn - 2001) and Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney (Western Bulldogs - 2003). Other No.1 picks include Drew Banfield (1992), Michael Gardiner (1996), Travis Johnstone (1997), Josh Fraser (1999), Brendon Goddard (2002), Brett Deledio (2004), Marc Murphy (2005), Bryce Gibbs (2006), Matthew Kreuzer (2007) and Jack Watts (2008).
2
NIGEL LAPPIN (BRISBANE LIONS - 1993)
Lappin was a dynamo for the Brisbane Lions, playing 279 matches from 1994-2008. He was also a three-time premiership player, four-time All-Australian and club champion.
PAUL HASLEBY (FREMANTLE - 1999)
Hasleby, a consistently high possession-winner, won the AFL Rising Star award in 2000 and was named All-Australian in 2003. Other standouts include Brad Ottens (Richmond - 1997), Luke Ball (St Kilda - 2001) and Dale Thomas (Collingwood - 2005). Anthony Rocca (Sydney - 1994) played just 22 of his 230 AFL matches from the No.2 pick. Trent Cotchin (Richmond - 2007) is a top long-term prospect.
11
BRAD JOHNSON (WESTERN BULLDOGS - 1993)
Johnson has been a marvel for the Bulldogs in the midfield or up forward. The skipper is a six-time All-Australian and has played more matches for the Dogs than any other player.
LENNY HAYES (ST KILDA - 1998)
Hayes is a leader in the Saints' midfield and one of the AFL's most respected players. He won the club's best and fairest in 2003 and has finished in the top three on four other occasions. He was named All-Australian in 2003, 2005 and 2009.
DARREN GLASS (WEST COAST - 1999)
The Eagles' skipper was a crucial part of the club's 2006 premiership and has led the side from full-back during its rebuilding phase. Glass is a two-time best and fairest winner (2007, 2009) and a dual All-Australian (2006, 2007).
18
ANTHONY STEVENS (NORTH MELBOURNE - 1988)
Stevens crafted a remarkable career between 1989 and 2004. A gritty onballer, he played 292 matches, including two premierships, and won two club champion awards.
DANIEL KERR (WEST COAST - 2000)
Kerr was a part of West Coast's dominant premiership-winning midfield in 2006, but has been hampered by injury in recent seasons. The nuggety midfielder was named All-Australian in 2007 and finished runner-up in the 2005 Brownlow Medal.
34
LEON DAVIS (COLLINGWOOD - 1999)
Davis has transformed himself from a flaky, inconsistent forward pocket to an elite midfielder in recent seasons. He has played 183 games for the Pies since debuting in 2000.
50
ALASTAIR LYNCH (FITZROY - 1986)
Lynch is one of Fitzroy's all-time greats, as highlighted by his selection in the club's team of the century. He played 120 matches for the Roys from 1988-93. Stephen Tingay played 162 matches for Melbourne, while Matthew Whelan (Melbourne - 1999) and Domenic Cassisi (Port Adelaide - 2000) have also performed well after being taken at this pick.
66
RYAN HARGRAVE (WESTERN BULLDOGS - 1999)
Hargrave has played 163 matches for the Western Bulldogs and finished in the club's top 10 in best and fairest voting two years running. A consistent defender, he keeps his opponents honest by winning plenty of his own football.
