Phantom Draft

By Matt Burgan 1:00 PM Wed 25 Nov, 2009
MATT BURGAN'S 2009 AFL PHANTOM DRAFT

Priority selection

1 - MELBOURNE - Tom Scully
DOB: 15/05/91, Height: 182cm, Weight: 74kg
Recruited from: Haileybury College/Dandenong Stingrays (VIC)
Draft range: 1-2
Meet Tom Scully

SCULLY or Trengove? Trengove or Scully? Either way, Melbourne will select the pair recruiters consider the draft's best with its first two picks. With Scully having carried the No.1 mantle for much of this year, the Demons will stick with this script, although it's splitting hairs as to whether he or Trengove is the better player. Scully is an elite endurance runner and his gut-running has been likened to that of Ben Cousins. Although injury prevented him from testing at this year's draft camp, he previously achieved an outstanding 15.8 in the beep test with the AIS-AFL Academy.

Round one

2 - MELBOURNE - Jack Trengove
DOB: 02/09/91, Height: 185cm, Weight: 82kg
Recruited from: Kybybolite/Sturt (SA)
Draft range: 1-2
Meet Jack Trengove

Although he will be taken at two, Trengove's exceptional performances in the SANFL senior finals showed he is equally deserving of the No.1 tag. In the preliminary final against Glenelg, he was best on ground with 29 disposals. Finals prevented Trengove from attending the NAB AFL Draft Camp, but he followed up at the South Australian state screening with an outstanding beep test: level 15.3. Likened to Collingwood great Nathan Buckley, Trengove has excellent speed, endurance and leadership. He can also play midfield, forward or back. He is no relation to Port Adelaide's Jackson Trengove.

3 - RICHMOND - Dustin Martin
DOB: 26/06/91, Height: 187cm, Weight: 86kg
Recruited from: Castlemaine/Bendigo Pioneers (VIC)
Draft range: 3
Meet Dustin Martin

Mark down this pick as the draft's cast-iron certainty. The Tigers have made no secret about their desire to recruit Martin, an attacking onballer who was All-Australian and averaged 25 disposals per match in the TAC Cup this year. Players with strong foot skills are a draft priority for Richmond, and Martin ranked equal second in the inaugural kicking test at this year's draft camp. With former top-three draft picks Brett Deledio and Trent Cotchin on board, the Tigers will soon have three class midfielders under the age of 23.

4 - FREMANTLE - Anthony Morabito
DOB: 29/10/91, Height: 190cm, Weight: 90kg
Recruited from: Harvey Brunswick/Peel Thunder (WA)
Draft range: 4-7
Meet Anthony Morabito

Although Geelong Falcons Ben Cunnington and Gary Rohan have seriously come under consideration, expect Fremantle to select the best player from its own backyard. A quick run-and-carry winger (think Adam Goodes when he plays midfield), Morabito is perfectly suited to the wide open spaces of Subiaco Oval. He shone at this year's under-18 championships, winning All-Australian honours and Western Australia's most valuable player award.

5 - NORTH MELBOURNE - Ben Cunnington
DOB: 30/06/91, Height: 186cm, Weight: 84kg
Recruited from: Cobden/Geelong Falcons (VIC)
Draft range: 4-6
Meet Ben Cunnington

Expect the Roos to snap up a player regarded as the perfect replacement for retired great Adam Simpson. A tough-as-teak inside midfielder, Cunnington is a clean ball-winner and as unrelenting at the contest as last year's top-10 pick Jack Ziebell. In 2009 Cunnington was an All-Australian, finished runner-up in the Morrish Medal (the Brownlow Medal equivalent in the TAC Cup), averaged 23 disposals per match and captained the Geelong Falcons. He has also been likened to Hawk Brad Sewell.

6 - SYDNEY SWANS - Gary Rohan
DOB: 07/06/91, Height: 186cm, Weight: 79kg
Recruited from: Cobden/Geelong Falcons (VIC)
Draft range: 3-10

Meet Gary Rohan

Rohan looks set to become a Swan ahead of Calder Cannon Jake Melksham, with the club's other targets in Anthony Morabito and Ben Cunnington unlikely to slip to six. Geelong Falcons regional manager and Cats great Michael Turner has gone on record saying Rohan is the most exciting TAC Cup player he has seen in the past 15 years. And it's not hard to see why, given his explosiveness, speed and aerial marking. Vic Country's most valuable player at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, the talent-laden half-forward will help cover the loss of retired Swans games record holder Michael O'Loughlin.

7 - WEST COAST EAGLES - Bradley Sheppard
DOB: 23/05/91, Height: 186cm, Weight: 78kg
Recruited from: Wesley College/East Fremantle (WA)
Draft range: 7-23
Meet Bradley Sheppard

This is where the draft will be shaped. West Coast has been torn between Sheppard, Lucas and Swan Districts' Lewis Jetta. It is now believed the Eagles will select the defender/midfielder, as he is considered one of the most reliable and consistent players in the draft. Most recruiters consider Sheppard a first-round selection - some a top-10 pick - so it's no surprise to see him here. Sheppard is courageous overhead and a fine rebounding defender/winger. A 2009 All-Australian, he was also a state under-17 cricketer for Western Australia.

8 - PORT ADELAIDE - John Butcher
DOB: 03/07/91, Height: 197cm, Weight: 84kg
Recruited from: Maffra/Gippsland Power (VIC)
Draft range: 5-14

Meet John Butcher

Port Adelaide starts its short and sweet appearance with consecutive picks at No.8 and No.9, before finishing with its last 'live' selection at No.16. A key forward for LAWT (Life After Warren Tredrea) will be a priority and that's where Butcher comes in. Widely recognised as the best key forward in this draft, he is an outstanding contested mark with excellent agility, pace and endurance for his size. Earlier in the year he was touted as a No.1 pick, but his rating slipped after close scrutiny during the under-18 championships - perhaps unfairly, given his pre-season was blighted by hip surgery.

9 - PORT ADELAIDE - Kane Lucas
DOB: 26/06/91, Height: 188cm, Weight: 79kg
Recruited from: Trinity College/East Fremantle (WA)
Draft range: 7-17
Meet Kane Lucas

Lucas was in the top echelon in speed, agility and endurance at draft camp and it is this remarkable mix that may give him the edge over Jake Melksham at this selection. Many recruiters rate him the draft's second best Sandgroper behind Anthony Morabito. A hard-running, highly-skilled ball-winner, he played 12 senior WAFL matches in 2009, including an outstanding final round featuring 27 disposals, 11 marks and three goals. His father Jack played 19 matches for the Sydney Swans from 1982-84.

10 - ESSENDON - Jake Melksham
DOB: 29/08/91, Height: 185cm, Weight: 75kg
Recruited from: PEGS/Calder Cannons (VIC)
Draft range: 5-10
Meet Jake Melksham

Unless John Butcher slides, expect the Bombers to take a midfielder with their first pick. Having acquired six 190cm-plus talls from eight selections in the 2007/08 drafts, they are looking to assist Jobe Watson and Brent Stanton. Melksham is believed to have the edge over Koby Stevens (Gippsland Power) and Andrew Moore (Eastern Ranges). But if Lucas slips through, he is touted as the one. Melksham pushed right up the rankings following his best-on-ground performance in Calder's TAC Cup grand final win at Etihad Stadium. Days later he backed up at draft camp with excellent agility, beep test and 20m sprint results. A well-balanced, skilful inside/outside midfielder, Melksham is tough at the stoppages.

11 - MELBOURNE - Daniel Talia
DOB: 02/10/91, Height: 194cm, Weight: 89kg
Recruited from: Assumption College/Calder Cannons (VIC)
Draft range: 8-16

Meet Daniel Talia

After netting two gun midfielders, the Demons will go tall with their third pick. Talia offers versatility - he played centre half-forward for Calder and was All-Australian at centre half-back in 2009. His versatility is a major factor in Melbourne's appeal. Despite missing the latter part of the year with a hamstring injury, he remains one of the draft's most wanted players. If it is not Talia, expect the Demons to select Peel Thunder's Aaron Black. Geelong Falcon Jasper McMillan-Pittard is also a serious contender and Ben Griffiths is believed to be in the hunt. The smaller Lewis Jetta - the first cousin of Melbourne's Neville - is a possibility.

12 - CARLTON - Aaron Black
DOB: 29/11/90, Height: 193cm, Weight: 78kg
Recruited from: Eaton/Peel Thunder (WA)
Draft range: 4-17
Meet Aaron Black

Having traded Brendan Fevola and delisted Cameron Cloke, Jake Edwards and Adam Hartlett, the Blues are likely to opt for a tall. Melbourne could snaffle Black first, but he shouldn't slip past the Blues at No.12. The club has been strongly connected to the athletic Black, who has a basketball background. Spring-heeled, Black is a strong mark and shot into calculations mid-year, particularly after starring in a WAFL colts match with six goals, 26 disposals, seven marks and 13 hit-outs. If Black is taken by Melbourne, expect the Blues to pounce on Daniel Talia, with Ben Griffiths also in the mix. Recent whispers have also mentioned former Saint Luke Ball.

13 - ADELAIDE - Lewis Jetta
DOB: 04/05/89, Height: 178cm, Weight: 72kg
Recruited from: Bridgetown/Swan Districts (WA)

Draft range: 7-15
Meet Lewis Jetta

It's believed Kane Lucas, Jetta, Koby Stevens and Calder Cannon Jake Carlisle are the priorities. With Lucas gone, expect the Crows to snap up the exciting Jetta, who will add some blistering pace (he clocked 2.95 seconds in the 20m sprint at draft camp) and run-and-carry. Jetta represented the Western Australian senior state team this year, impressing with three goals, including the match-winner in the dying stages. Geelong Falcon Jasper McMillan-Pittard and Eastern's Andrew Moore have also been linked with the Crows.

14 - SYDNEY SWANS - Jasper McMillan-Pittard
DOB: 01/01/91, Height: 185cm, Weight: 70kg
Recruited from: Torquay/Geelong Falcons (VIC)
Draft range: 12-15
Meet Jasper McMillan-Pittard

McMillan-Pittard has flown up the rankings in recent times, with some talent judges rating him in the top 10. So impressed was Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos with McMillan-Pittard after a draft camp interview, he joked about wanting the left-footer as an assistant coach. Expect the Swans to pounce on the rebounding half-back/winger, who will add to their midfield with Nic Fosdike, Jared Crouch and Tim Schmidt all retiring this year. Koby Stevens and Andrew Moore are next in line for the Swans.

15 - WESTERN BULLDOGS - Andrew Moore
DOB: 30/05/91, Height: 188cm, Weight: 81kg
Recruited from: Yarra Valley Grammar/Eastern Ranges (VIC)

Draft range: 10-17
Meet Andrew Moore

Expect the Dogs to nab the younger brother of Richmond's Kelvin at pick 15. Moore has been compared to Swan Ryan O'Keefe and his ability to play midfield, forward and back offers the Dogs great flexibility. He has also been compared to rising Crow Andy Otten. Moore topped the running vertical jump test at draft camp with 85cm. If Lewis Jetta falls to the Dogs, he will not slip past No.15, while Jasper McMillan-Pittard is next in line.

16 - PORT ADELAIDE - Nathan Vardy
DOB: 25/06/91, Height: 198cm, Weight: 89kg
Recruited from: Allies/Gippsland Power (VIC)
Draft range: 8-28

Meet Nathan Vardy

With Brendon Lade retired and Dean Brogan almost 31, the Power need a ruckman, and Vardy is widely regarded as the best in the draft - having the edge over Sandringham Dragon Max Gawn and North Adelaide's James Craig. A determined competitor, Vardy has excellent foot skills and agility for his size, alongside quality tap work. Brad Sheppard and Ben Griffiths are the other genuine alternatives at 16, with Calder Cannon Jake Carlisle and North Adelaide's Luke Tapscott also chances. Late mail also has Luke Ball in the mix for Port's third and final live selection.

17 - GEELONG - Jake Carlisle
DOB:
01/10/91, Height: 196cm, Weight: 83kg
Recruited from:
Craigieburn/Calder Cannons (VIC)

Draft range: 8-28
Meet Jake Carlisle

The Cats are said to be eyeing a tall with their first pick, with Carlisle believed to be at the top of their list. Carlisle’s height will go part of the way to replacing the departed Tom Harley, Matthew Egan and Shane Mumford. Recent tall draftees Scott Simpson and Dan McKenna have been delisted. An elite junior cricketer, Carlisle can play forward or back and has good skills for his size and is strong on the lead. Daniel Menzel, Eastern Ranges' Jordan Gysberts and Geelong Falcon Callum Bartlett have also been strongly touted at this pick.

Round two

18 - MELBOURNE - Max Gawn
DOB: 28/12/91, Height: 208cm, Weight: 104kg
Recruited from: Ormond/Sandringham Dragons
Draft range: 16-36

Meet Max Gawn

The tallest player to have come through draft camp in 16 years, Gawn has come right into top 20 calculations in recent weeks and is firming for the Dees at No.18. With just Mark Jamar, Paul Johnson and rookie Jake Spencer on Melbourne's list, the club will target a ruckman. Gawn suffered a knee injury just before the under-18s, but remains one of the most sought-after players in this draft. If Port Adelaide doesn't take the athletic giant at No.16 and Melbourne looks elsewhere - perhaps to the Northern Territory's Troy Taylor - Fremantle will snap him up at No.20. Despite strong speculation, don't expect the Dees to head down the Luke Ball path.

19 - RICHMOND - Luke Tapscott
DOB: 28/06/91, Height: 180cm, Weight: 86kg
Recruited from: Orroroo/North Adelaide (SA)
Draft range: 8-24

Meet Luke Tapscott

Richmond won't find many players with better foot skills than Tapscott. The powerfully-built midfielder/forward has been compared to Lion Daniel Rich and is widely acknowledged as the best kick in the draft, capable of thumping the ball more than 60 metres. The Tigers are massive fans of the 2009 All-Australian, but would also consider talls Jake Carlisle and Ben Griffiths, and the pacy Ryan Bastinac. Tapscott has strong hands, ball-winning ability and is fierce at the ball.

20 - FREMANTLE - Nat Fyfe
DOB: 18/09/91, Height: 186cm, Weight: 73kg
Recruited from:
Aquinas College/Claremont (WA)
Draft range: 20-39

Meet Nat Fyfe

If Gawn is - pardon the pun - gawn, expect Fremantle to snap up Fyfe ahead of Troy Taylor. Fyfe has flown up the chart in recent times, particularly on the back of his six-goal performance for Claremont in the WAFL colts grand final. Noted for his strong marking, Fyfe has attracted strong interest and would provide Freo with a valuable new dimension up front. North Melbourne and West Coast have four of the following five picks and are also keen on his services.

21 - NORTH MELBOURNE - Koby Stevens
DOB: 18/06/91, Height: 187cm, Weight: 83kg
Recruited from: Lucknow/Gippsland Power (VIC)
Draft range: 10-24

Meet Koby Stevens

There will be a slider - as is the case most drafts - and Stevens could be one, but only just outside the top 20. This is because clubs with multiple picks in the top 20 will address several needs. Stevens could just as easily be snapped up by Essendon at No.10 or the Swans at No.14. A tough and ferocious inside midfielder, it is believed North Melbourne rates Stevens highly, but it faces a tough choice as the Roos are also a big fan of Ryan Bastinac. Stevens was the equal leading tackler in this year's under-18s (averaging six per match) and averaged 26 disposals with Gippsland. He has also been involved in leadership groups with the AIS-AFL Academy, Vic Country and Gippsland.

22 - WEST COAST EAGLES - Ryan Bastinac
DOB: 22/06/91, Height: 183cm, Weight: 74kg
Recruited from: Rowville/Dandenong Stingrays (VIC)
Draft range: 13-25

Meet Ryan Bastinac

Expect West Coast to select the next best available talent, with Bastinac right in the mix. At draft camp he recorded a level 15.1 beep test, which would have placed him among the top five current AFL players to have been tested and equal with Carlton captain Chris Judd. Co-captain of Dandenong with Scully in 2009, Bastinac also ran a time of 10.03 in the 3km time-trial, has fine foot skills and is clean in heavy traffic.

23 - WEST COAST EAGLES - Gerrick Weedon
DOB: 25/05/91, Height: 186cm, Weight: 80kg
Recruited from: Clontarf College/Claremont (WA)
Draft range: 22-52

Meet Gerrick Weedon

A highly-skilled forward with a great set of hands, Weedon is a forward/midfielder with good defensive pressure and therefore a wanted man at West Coast. Also in line are No.22 and No.23 are Nat Fyfe, Geelong Falcon Allen Christensen, Tasmanians Jesse Crichton and Ryan Harwood and Subiaco's Trent Dennis-Lane.

24 - ESSENDON - Jordan Gysberts
DOB: 11/06/91, Height: 188cm, Weight: 83kg
Recruited from: Yarra Valley Grammar/Eastern Ranges (VIC)
Draft range: 13-29

Meet Jordan Gysberts

The Bombers are sure to look at another midfielder with their second pick and the clean-handling Gysberts is right in their sights. A smart footballer who can play forward or back, he is efficient by hand or foot and could go to either Adelaide or Geelong in the first round.

25 - NORTH MELBOURNE - Daniel Menzel
DOB: 13/09/91, Height: 185cm, Weight: 77kg
Recruited from:
Golden Grove/Central District (SA)
Draft range: 13-29

Meet Daniel Menzel

Menzel has attracted strong interest and is now viewed as a certain top-30 selection, with North lured by his ability to play down back, up forward or on the ball. A proficient user of the ball, Menzel is noted for his rebound, footy smarts, endurance and efficiency - averaging a remarkable 85 per cent at the under-18s. It is understood he won't get past the Brisbane Lions at No.27 and, like Gysberts, could become a Crow or a Cat in the first round.

26 - ESSENDON - Mitchell Duncan
DOB: 10/06/91, Height: 188cm, Weight: 81kg
Recruited from: Trinity College/East Perth (WA)
Draft range: 18-32

Meet Mitchell Duncan

The big question is: will Luke Ball become a Don at No.26? The answer, most probably, is no. With two midfielders lined up for its opening picks, Essendon is believed to be keen to make a play for the versatile Duncan. A strong and skilful lead-up forward, he can also play across half-back and has been likened to West Coast's Andrew Embley. He is strong overhead, presents well and offers genuine leadership. He was strongly linked to West Coast, and won't get past St Kilda's first pick at No.32.

27 - BRISBANE LIONS - Callum Bartlett
DOB: 19/06/91, Height: 179cm, Weight: 75kg
Recruited from: North Geelong/Geelong Falcons (VIC)
Draft range:
14-28
Meet Callum Bartlett

Lions coach Michael Voss has also publicly declared his interest in Ball, but will instead spend his first pick on the agile Bartlett, who has been compared to both Luke Power and Daniel Rich. A goalkicking midfielder and a fine user of the ball, he is difficult to place in this draft, having missed the 2009 season following a knee reconstruction. He received considerable praise for his diligent rehabilitation undertaken at Geelong Cats. Some recruiters believe the quick and agile Bartlett could still be a first-round pick, with the Cats not out of the question. Daniel Menzel has also been closely linked with the Lions, but is unlikely to be available at 27.

28 - GEELONG - Joseph Dare
DOB: 17/10/92, Height: 188cm, Weight: 81kg
Recruited from: Colac/Geelong Falcons (VIC)
Draft range: 17-39

Meet Joseph Dare

It will be a surprise if the Cats don't take Dare in this draft - whether with this pick or their opener. He is viewed as the ideal replacement for Darren Milburn, who is in the twilight of an outstanding career. Capable of playing up forward, Dare has strong hands and is a fine reader of play, and recruiters believe he would fit nicely with Geelong's style. At worst, he won't get past Hawthorn's first pick at No.39.

29 - ADELAIDE - James Craig
DOB: 18/04/91, Height: 195cm Weight: 92kg
Recruited from: Fitzroy/North Adelaide (SA)
Draft range: 16-39

Meet James Craig

The Crows are considering two players at No.29 - Craig and Sandringham Dragon Jack Gunston. Craig is one of the top rucks in this year's pool - the standout at the under-18 champs. At draft camp he recorded a standing vertical jump of 76cm - putting him behind only Trent Croad and Nic Naitanui on the all-time list. He also has the ability to play in a key position.  Eastern Ranges' Ayden Kennedy is a possible third contender.

30 - COLLINGWOOD - Luke Ball

DOB: 25/05/84, Height: 183cm, Weight: 84kg
Recruited from: Xavier College/Sandringham Dragons/St Kilda (VIC)
Draft range: 10-30

Profile: Luke Ball

Lock it in, Ball will become a Pie. The disgruntled Saint was unable to strike a deal with his preferred club during October's trade week, but now will drop the red for just the black and white. Ball, who was St Kilda captain in 2006 and co-captain in 2007, will provide outstanding leadership and presence around some emerging Collingwood midfielders. An All-Australian and St Kilda best-and-fairest winner in 2005, Ball played 142 matches from 2003-09. Should there be any shock swoop by the Demons, Dons or Lions, expect the Magpies to plump for Troy Taylor or Gold Coast's Josh Thomas.

31 - WESTERN BULLDOGS - Ben Griffiths
DOB: 17/09/91, Height: 199cm, Weight: 98kg
Recruited from: Blackburn/Eastern Ranges (VIC)
Draft range: 8-35

Meet Ben Griffiths

Exactly where Griffiths sits is dividing recruiters, due to his unfortunate run with injuries. What the big man has shown is tantalising. The Bulldogs are massive fans and will take Griffiths if available. Although the Dogs snapped up Barry Hall in the trade period, they will gladly put Griffiths in the bank as a long-term key forward option. He is a strong contested mark, quick for his size and a thumping kick. Jack Gunston, Josh Thomas, Ayden Kennedy and Troy Taylor are also known to be contenders at 31.

32 - ST KILDA - Sam Reid
DOB: 27/12/91, Height: 194cm, Weight: 87kg
Recruited from: Wangaratta/Murray Bushrangers (VIC)

Draft range: 21-41
Meet Sam Reid

With Max Hudghton retired and Matt Maguire moving on, the Saints want a defender. Three players are strong chances for the side's first pick - Dandenong Stingray Dylan Roberton, Claremont's Nicholas Winmar and Reid, who may have the edge thanks to the development left in him. He makes the draft cut-off date by just four days, is still growing and has some outstanding athletic qualities for his size. At draft camp, he ran 20m in 2.92 seconds, a high 14.7 beep test and was equal second in the inaugural kicking test. The younger brother of Collingwood's Ben.

33 - ESSENDON - Anthony Long
DOB: 06/01/91, Height: 187cm, Weight: 74kg
Recruited from:
St Marys/Calder Cannons (NT)
Draft range: 33-55

Meet Anthony Long

Will there be some romance in Essendon's final pick? The nephew of 1993 Norm Smith medallist Michael moves like his uncle and is noted for his footy smarts. A skilful running defender, he is agile and has an excellent vertical leap. Recruiters praise his outstanding character, which has contributed to strong interest from Adelaide, Sydney Swans and Collingwood. Western Jet Majak Daw is an outside chance at 33.

Round three

34 - MELBOURNE - Troy Taylor
DOB: 12/09/91, Height: 189cm, Weight: 77kg
Recruited from: South Alice Springs/NT Thunder (NT)

Draft range: 18-34
Meet Troy Taylor

Likened by some recruiters to Michael O'Loughlin and Daniel Motlop, Taylor is regarded as one of the most exciting players in the draft. He has also been strongly linked to Fremantle (at No.20), North Melbourne and Collingwood. The Dees are on the hunt for forwards and may even consider him at 18, but he will go no lower than this pick. Skilful and smooth moving, Taylor can play tall, mark against bigger opponents and win the contested ball.

35 - RICHMOND - Ayden Kennedy
DOB: 31/10/91, Height: 192cm, Weight: 81kg
Recruited from: Wantirna South/Eastern Ranges (VIC)
Draft range: 24-41

Meet Ayden Kennedy

Kennedy was the quickest player at draft camp, running 20m in 2.88 seconds, and has since risen up the pecking order. With the retirement of superstar Matthew Richardson, Jay Schulz traded and Cleve Hughes delisted, the Tigers are looking to add personnel in attack and they are very keen on the athletic tall forward, who can also play down back. Kennedy will also be looked at in the 20s, with Essendon, North Melbourne and Adelaide all expressing interest.

36 - FREMANTLE - Travis Colyer
DOB: 24/08/91, Height: 175cm, Weight: 73kg
Recruited from: Trinity College/Claremont (WA)
Draft range:
20-39
Meet Travis Colyer

Fremantle's interest in Colyer is such that it will consider spending its No.20 pick on him. He has exceptional pace, would add plenty of bite to its midfield and is perfectly suited to Subiaco Oval. An attacking midfielder, Colyer has been compared to North Melbourne skipper Brent Harvey. He is viewed by some recruiters as a top-20 pick and has been linked with Essendon, Melbourne and Hawthorn. Will go no lower than 39.

37 - NORTH MELBOURNE - Josh Thomas

DOB: 01/10/91, Height: 176cm, Weight: 74kg
Recruited from: Redland/Gold Coast (QLD)
Draft range:
21-41
Meet Josh Thomas

Like Dayne Beams last year, Thomas rejected an offer to become a member of the inaugural Gold Coast team in 2011, instead opting for the draft. And there have been plenty of interested parties, too, including Essendon, the Brisbane Lions and Hawthorn. Collingwood is at the forefront, but expect the Roos to pounce and bolster their midfield stocks. Capable of playing half-forward and half-back, Thomas is a contested ball-winner with sharp kicking skills.

38 - SYDNEY SWANS - Jesse Crichton
DOB: 18/06/91, Height: 184cm, Weight: 72kg
Recruited from: North Launceston/Tassie Mariners (TAS)
Draft range: 22-46

Meet Jesse Crichton

Crichton will jostle with Tasmanian teammate Ryan Harwood as the first Apple Isle player selected. The creative playmaker fits the bill at the Swans, who are very interested in filling the void left by running players Nic Fosdike, Jared Crouch and Tim Schmidt. A strong competitor, with exceptional vision and awareness, Crichton was the equal leading tackler in the under-18 championships. St Kilda, West Coast and Hawthorn are also known to be interested.

39 - HAWTHORN - Dylan Grimes
DOB: 16/07/91, Height: 193cm, Weight: 82kg
Recruited from: Hurstbridge/Northern Knights (VIC)
Draft range: 29-46

Meet Dylan Grimes

Hawthorn is the last club to enter this year's draft and will be delighted if James Craig, Joe Dare or Travis Colyer slips through. With a tall defender required to back-up the injured Trent Croad, Grimes is definitely a target. The younger of brother of emerging Melbourne midfielder Jack, he is quick for his size, agile and possesses leadership qualities.

40 - GEELONG - Allen Christensen
DOB: 19/05/91, Height: 176cm, Weight: 75kg
Recruited from:
Lara/Geelong Falcons (VIC)
Draft range: 22-42

Meet Allen Christensen

Touted as a possible top-10 and a certain top-20 pick earlier in the year, the talent-laden Christensen has slipped down the pecking order, but won't get past Geelong's third or fourth picks (40 or 42). A prolific ball-winner and clever up forward, he finished runner-up in the 2009 Morrish Medal, averaging 26 disposals per match. He is the nephew of former Geelong players Damien and Marty. West Coast and Essendon are contenders for his services.

41 - NORTH MELBOURNE - Ryan Harwood
DOB: 08/07/91, Height: 183cm, Weight: 81kg
Recruited from: Glenorchy/Tassie Mariners (TAS)
Draft range: 22-53

Meet Ryan Harwood

It's believed Harwood is on North Melbourne's radar, having spent time at Arden St during his AIS-AFL Academy stint. The leading clearance player in this year's under-18 championships, Harwood was rewarded with All-Australian selection. A genuine inside midfielder, he also has excellent agility. West Coast and St Kilda have also been touted suitors. Oakleigh Chargers' Jamie Macmillan is another genuine North Melbourne candidate.

42 - GEELONG - Christian Howard
DOB: 19/03/91, Height: 184cm, Weight: 81kg
Recruited from:
Sacred Heart College/Glenelg (SA)
Draft range: 31-60

Meet Christian Howard

Howard has shot up in recent times and now looks certain to be drafted. His foot skills are regarded among the best in the draft. He was Glenelg's designated kicker during its 2009 under-18 premiership season. A dashing half-back with good endurance, Howard simply got better as the year went on. One recruiter is adamant he will be a top-30 selection. Howard has also been mooted with the Western Bulldogs, Adelaide, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Hawthorn and Brisbane Lions.

43 - CARLTON - Dylan Roberton
DOB: 21/06/91, Height: 191cm, Weight: 80kg
Recruited from: Frankston/Dandenong Stingrays (VIC)
Draft range: 24-45

Meet Dylan Roberton

The Blues are believed to be eyeing Roberton, with his rebound and flexibility from defence appealing. An excellent user of the ball, he reads the play well and has outstanding endurance. Some recruiters feel he could push into the top 30. He remains a genuine contender for St Kilda at No.32 and Adelaide also has interest. North Ballarat Rebels' Matthew Dea has also been linked to the Blues with this pick.

44 - RICHMOND - Jamie Macmillan
DOB: 29/09/91, Height: 188cm, Weight: 81kg
Recruited from:
Scotch College/Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)
Draft range: 25-51
Meet Jamie Macmillan

The Tigers are understood to have Macmillan right in their plans, given that he suits a flanker/midfield need they are targeting. The Kangaroos will also be monitoring him closely, as they are strong admirers. Along with his flexibility, pace and clean hands, Macmillan's strongest attribute is his decision-making. One recruiter says he is freakish in that area. He is also a talented cricketer.

45 - ADELAIDE - Jack Gunston
DOB: 16/10/91, Height: 191cm, Weight: 74kg
Recruited from:
Sandringham Dragons (VIC)
Draft range: 25-53

Meet Jack Gunston

Adelaide has been strongly aligned with Gunston and it would not surprise if it selected him at No.29. The versatile forward/defender has climbed up the rankings and has attracted strong interest from the Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne and Brisbane Lions. Some talent identifiers believe he is a genuine second-round selection. Gunston is an outstanding overhead mark and flexible enough to play on smalls or talls. He booted six goals against Murray Bushrangers in round 19 this year.

46 - HAWTHORN - Sam Shaw
DOB: 05/04/91, Height: 191cm, Weight: 80kg
Recruited from: Xavier College/Oakleigh Chargers (VIC)
Draft range: 31-60

Meet Sam Shaw

The athletic and versatile Shaw is right in the mix for Hawthorn's second pick, with his ability to play as a tall defender an attraction. He has elite speed for his size, is agile and possesses a fine leap. The Brisbane Lions, Western Bulldogs and St Kilda are other candidates.

47 - BRISBANE LIONS - Matthew Dea
DOB: 13/10/91, Height: 186cm, Weight: 83kg
Recruited from: Ballarat Clarendon College /North Ballarat Rebels (VIC)
Draft range: 29-rookie

Meet Matthew Dea

The former elite junior basketballer has rocketed up the order and now looks certain to be drafted. Dea has an exceptional vertical leap, explosive pace and the ability to play forward or back. His considerable scope for improvement is believed to be an attraction for the Lions. Adelaide and Collingwood are the other leading contenders, but he is now unlikely to last until the Pies' next pick (No.62). Dea captained the under-18 Country Victoria basketball team and was a member of the Victorian under-20 state team.

48 - FREMANTLE - Jack Fitzpatrick
DOB: 26/06/91, Height: 201cm, Weight: 85kg
Recruited from:
Wyndhamvale/Western Jets (VIC)
Draft range: 34-rookie

Meet Jack Fitzpatrick

Exactly where Fitzpatrick sits in the draft remains a mystery, but it is known Fremantle is keen on his ability to play ruck and hold down a key post at either end. Melbourne and Adelaide are also contenders. Fitzpatrick is an excellent contested mark and is hard to stop on the lead. He is super quick - he topped the repeat sprints at draft camp - and agile for his size.

49 - FREMANTLE - Trent Dennis-Lane
DOB: 30/08/88, Height: 182cm, Weight: 74kg
Recruited from: Subiaco (WA)
Draft range: 22-rookie

Meet Trent Dennis-Lane

Dennis-Lane had an outstanding year in the WAFL kicking 57 goals, including four in the senior grand final, to finish second on the league goalkicking table. Fremantle is more than interested in the quick crumbing forward given he has started training with the club. His defensive pressure inside 50 is also excellent. There has been speculation West Coast may pounce, but it would have to be with one of its last two picks at No.22 or No.23.

Round four

50 - MELBOURNE - Liam Patrick
DOB: 04/03/88, Height: 185cm, Weight: 73kg
Recruited from: Lajamanu/Federals/Wanderers (NT)
Draft range: 34-rookie

Meet Liam Patrick

Patrick, the cousin of exciting Melbourne forward Liam Jurrah, looms as one of the stories of the draft. He plays for Wanderers in the NTFL, and hails from Lajamanu, 557 kilometres south-west of Katherine on the edge of the Tanami Desert. The Demons are relishing the thought of reuniting Jurrah and Patrick, who played together for Yuendumu in their under-17 days. Hawthorn, Richmond, North Melbourne, Essendon and Brisbane Lions are also keen. It wouldn't surprise if the Dees pluck Patrick with their previous pick at No.34. He has a brilliant vertical leap and has played as a smaller ruckman. Essendon is also in the mix, having flown him down from the top end to Melbourne this week. Southport's Brock McCauley is also a chance for the Demons.

51 - RICHMOND - Joshua Cowan
DOB: 16/03/91, Height: 184cm, Weight: 72kg
Recruited from: Daylesford/North Ballarat Rebels (VIC)

A smart run-and-carry wingman/half-back, Cowan is composed and a fine reader of play. He has excellent endurance and fits Richmond's kicking bill, averaging 20 disposals at an efficiency rate of 78 per cent in the TAC Cup this year. Adelaide, Hawthorn and Collingwood have definitely shown interest.

Recruited from: Augusta-Margaret River/East Perth (WA)
Draft range: 46-rookie

Meet Ben Stratton

The versatile, rebounding defender is right on Fremantle's radar, with Collingwood and St Kilda in the mix. Freo sees him as a mature-age defender who can step up to the pace of AFL football quickly. Stratton played WAFL seniors in 2009 and impressed with his one-on-one contests, strong overhead marking and good pace. Perth's Cameron Kickett, East Fremantle's Kyle Hardingham and West Perth's Josh Donaldson and Andrew Strijk have also been linked with Fremantle.

53 - NORTH MELBOURNE - Majak Daw
DOB: 11/03/91, Height: 194cm, Weight: 89kg
Recruited from: Wyndhamvale/Western Jets (VIC)
Draft range: 33-rookie

Meet Majak Daw

The Roos are seriously considering Daw, who would become the first Sudanese-born player on an AFL list. Daw's story is extraordinary. He lived in the Sudan capital Khartoum as a child and spent three years in Egypt before his family arrived in Melbourne in 2003. It was just four seasons ago when he first touched a Sherrin. A ruckman possessing a phenomenal vertical leap, Daw is also exceptionally quick for his size. Daw would be the perfect match for the Roos, who are set to have strong multiculturalism links through their 'Learning and Life Centre', which opens at Arden St in 2010. Expect Daw to be selected ahead of ex-Demon Simon Buckley, who was training with North Melbourne, but is now expected to become a Pie.

54 - SYDNEY SWANS - Matthew Panos
DOB: 25/01/91, Height: 191cm, Weight: 91kg
Recruited from: Rostrevor College/Norwood (SA)
Draft range: 33-rookie

Meet Matthew Panos

The Swans will definitely consider Panos, as they are looking for a tall option following the departure of veteran spearhead Barry Hall to the Bulldogs. Although his 14 goals and 25 marks at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships earned him All-Australian honours this year, Panos has divided recruiters' opinions. An excellent mark and beautiful kick, he is capable of slamming goals from outside 55m. He is also strong on the lead and a fine mark. Melbourne will also consider Panos at No.50.

55 - SYDNEY SWANS - Michael Barlow
DOB: 18/12/87, Height: 189cm, Weight: 92kg
Recruited from:
Shepparton United/Werribee (VIC)
Draft range: 41-85

Meet Michael Barlow

Widely regarded by recruiters as the best VFL prospect in this year's draft, Barlow has attracted strong interest from the Sydney Swans, North Melbourne and Collingwood. The Swans view Barlow as a mature-age player who can help rejuvenate their midfield/forward stocks. A versatile ball-winner with elite endurance, Barlow won the Fothergill-Round Medal as the VFL's most promising under-23 player and finished runner-up in the J.J. Liston Trophy (the Brownlow Medal equivalent). Gippsland Power's Jack Weston, Western Jets' Johnny Rayner and North Ballarat's Andrew Hooper are in the mix.

56 - GEELONG - Mitch Fisher
DOB: 22/04/91, Height: 182cm, Weight: 79kg
Recruited from:
Modewarre/Geelong Falcons (VIC)
Draft range: 39-69
Meet Mitch Fisher

The Cats are very keen on the hard-at-it defender/onballer. He has been right under Geelong's noses and the prospect that he could step straight up next year is another appealing factor. Hawthorn is also known to be interested. A powerful, penetrating kick, Fisher is an excellent ball-user who has the ability to play tall. Ex-Swan Daniel O'Keefe and former Dog Guy O'Keefe - no relation - have been training with the club and could come into the equation.

57 - HAWTHORN - Derick Wanganeen
DOB: 05/02/91, Height: 172cm, Weight: 63kg
Recruited from: Mallee Park/Port Adelaide (SA)
Draft range: 46-rookie

Meet Derick Wanganeen

Hawthorn is excited by Wanganeen's speed and strong defensive attributes. He is also excellent in traffic and has fine evasive skills. Capable of playing in the midfield, down back or up forward, Wanganeen is the cousin of 1993 Brownlow medallist and dual premiership player Gavin Wanganeen. It wouldn't surprise if the Hawks took him at No.46.

58 - HAWTHORN - Jack Hannath
DOB: 09/07/91, Height: 199cm, Weight: 83kg
Recruited from: Angaston/Central District (SA)
Draft range: 46-rookie

Meet Jack Hannath

The Hawks are set to nab a developing ruckman as well as one with AFL experience in this draft period. Raw youngster Hannath - whom the Hawks rate very highly - fits the 'development' category perfectly. He has good skills and awareness for his size and has progressed considerably this year. The Hawks will also consider Calder Cannons small forward Robbie Hicks, Bendigo Pioneers' Jordan Williams and Eastern Ranges' Josh Dyson at No.57 and No.58.

59 - CARLTON - Jordan Williams
DOB: 06/05/91, Height: 185cm, Weight: 80kg
Recruited from:
Echuca/Bendigo Pioneers (NSW)
Draft range: 31-rookie

Meet Jordan Williams

It wouldn't be a surprise if Williams is plucked earlier than the Blues' final 'live' selection as his credentials have lifted since he displayed a fine blend of speed and endurance at the draft camp. The Blues admire the half-back/winger's run-and-carry style and contested ball-winning ability. Hawthorn, the Western Bulldogs, Fremantle and North Melbourne are also keen on the NSW/ACT representative. Other chances include Andrew Hooper and Sturt mature-ager Michael Coad.

60 - ST KILDA - Nicholas Winmar
DOB: 27/04/91, Height: 190cm, Weight: 78kg
Recruited from: Scarborough/Claremont (WA)
Draft range: 32-77

Meet Nicholas Winmar

Winmar is the second cousin of St Kilda great Nicky Winmar and will definitely be taken at this pick if available. There is a genuine possibility the Saints could select him with their first pick at No.32. It is not mere romance that sees Winmar linked to his relative's old team - the club's recruiters rate enormously Winmar's versatility and ability to run from half-back. A fluent mover and penetrating kick, Winmar was ranked equal second in the kicking test at this year's draft camp. Collingwood and Hawthorn have also been linked to Winmar.

61 - ADELAIDE - Sam Iles
DOB: 19/06/87, Height: 185cm, Weight: 83kg
Recruited from:
Clarence/Tassie Mariners/Tasmania/Box Hill Hawks (TAS)
Draft range: 45-rookie
Profile: Sam Iles

Adelaide has been strongly linked to Iles, who played seven matches for Collingwood from 2006-07. The Swans, Geelong and Hawthorn are also interested in the midfielder, who did his draft prospects no harm after finishing equal third in the 2009 J.J. Liston Trophy. It is understood if he is overlooked in the draft he could be headed to the Gold Coast, as it is eyeing him with one of its first five selections in the December NAB AFL Rookie Draft. Murray Bushranger Brayden Norris, Eastern Ranges' Matthew Scott and Geelong Falcon Luke Thompson are also chances.

62 - COLLINGWOOD - Simon Buckley
DOB: 18/04/87, Height: 190cm, Weight: 90kg
Recruited from: St Pauls/Sandringham Dragons/Melbourne (VIC)
Draft range: 37-85

Profile: Simon Buckley

Although Buckley has been training with North Melbourne and is still a possibility to land at Arden St, it's understood he will be overlooked by the Roos and snapped up by Collingwood at No.62. The Magpies believe he can add some run-and-carry from half-back or a wing. Buckley played 21 matches for Melbourne from 2007-09, but managed just one appearance this season due to groin/hip injuries. The former Demon has also been linked with Carlton, Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs.

63 - WESTERN BULLDOGS - Jason Tutt
DOB: 15/05/91, Height: 177cm, Weight: 72kg
Recruited from: Ainslie/NSW-ACT Rams (ACT)
Draft range: 38-76

Meet Jason Tutt

Tutt looks set to become just the second current AFL-listed player from Canberra, joining Swans co-captain Craig Bolton. The Dogs are definitely eyeing him off at this pick, as they believe his run and penetrating kicks out of defence can add to their group. Collingwood, the Sydney Swans and Carlton are possibilities to take Tutt, who can also be called on to use his blend of speed and endurance in the midfield.

64 - ST KILDA - Marcus Davies
DOB: 04/06/91, Height: 188cm, Weight: 84kg
Recruited from: North Hobart/Tassie Mariners (TAS)
Draft range: 40-rookie

Meet Marcus Davies

Davies has come under the radar of a number of clubs, however he has been most strongly linked to St Kilda's penultimate selection. His elite endurance - highlighted by an outstanding level 15.1 beep test at the draft camp - has strongly captured the Saints' interest. Melbourne, the Brisbane Lions, Carlton and Adelaide are believed to be the others right in the mix for the half-back/midfielder.

65 - GEELONG - Jeremy Laidler

DOB: 27/11/91, Height: 186cm, Weight: 69kg
Recruited from:
Alexandra/Murray Bushrangers (VIC)

Meet Brayden Norris

Norris' elite performances at draft camp helped promote his chances considerably. He equalled the beep test record held by Swan Jarrad McVeigh, achieving level 15.6. Norris also ran the 3km time-trial in 10.05 minutes. Richmond is looking to add to its attack and the hard-running forward is definitely in its thinking. His athleticism has also attracted the interest of Adelaide.

68 - FREMANTLE - Pass

Fremantle will hold over a choice for the pre-season draft to welcome utility Adam McPhee back from Essendon.

69 - HAWTHORN - Adam Pattison
DOB: 05/03/86, Height: 198cm, Weight: 97kg
Recruited from: Old Paradians/Northern Knights/Richmond (VIC)
Draft range: 57-rookie

Profile: Adam Pattison

The Hawks will select a ruckman with AFL experience with its last 'live' pick. Ex-Tiger Adam Pattison, who played 61 matches from 2005-09, is believed to have the edge over former Pie and Blue Cameron Cloke, who has come under the Port Adelaide microscope as a mature-age rookie. Former Dog Wayde Skipper is also a contender while former Chris Bryan, formerly with Carlton and Collingwood, is a chance here however he is also pursuing a gridiron punting career. Matt Maguire could also come into the equation late in the piece.

70 - HAWTHORN - Matthew Suckling
(Promoted rookie selection)

Astbury is a lead-up forward/key defender with strong foot skills - he was ranked among the top-10 in the kicking test at draft camp - putting him right in Richmond's calculations. He also possesses a strong work rate and good endurance for his size. Melbourne and St Kilda have also been mooted as possible destinations. 72 - CARLTON - Aaron Joseph
(Promoted rookie selection)
Profile: Aaron Joseph

Recruited from: Aberfeldie/Calder Cannons/North Melbourne (VIC)
Draft range: 73-rookie
Profile: Jesse Smith

The ex-Roo was strongly linked to Geelong during trade week but has since been on the Lions' radar. Although the Cats appear to be out of the picture and he has since trained with Hawthorn, Smith is still in the mix for one of the Lions' later picks. Injuries are a concern, but with three late selections (No.73, No.84 and No.91) they may take the punt. If he gets his body right, the midfielder/half-back who played 27 matches from 2005-08, will be a steal.

74 - ADELAIDE - Brodie Martin
(Promoted rookie selection)
Profile: Brodie Martin

Profile: Sam Power

Power is a genuine chance to join his older brother Luke up north, adding further depth to the revamped Lions. He produced some solid numbers in his last five appearances for the Roos, averaging 26 disposals per match. If he is overlooked in this draft, expect him to become a mature-age rookie. Gippsland Power's Mitch Golby, Western Jets' Sean Tighe and Lukas Markovic from the Box Hill Hawks have been linked with the Lions.

85 - COLLINGWOOD - Jack Weston
DOB: 03/04/91, Height: 189cm, Weight: 88kg
Recruited from:
Foster/Gippsland Power (VIC)

Collingwood has been strongly linked with Weston after they looked at him very closely as a 17-year-old last year. He is quick, agile and has fine skills.
