PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams says the club will continue to take a conservative approach with injured star David Rodan, despite the onballer making remarkable progress in his comeback from a full knee reconstruction.

Rodan, 26, opted to have the LARS [Ligament Augmentation and Reconstruction System] procedure, used with success by Sydney Swan Nick Malceski, rather than a traditional reconstruction when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament at training in December.

The Fijian-born livewire was able to walk unaided just days after the surgery and is now back running at speed.

Malceski returned to the field 12 weeks after tearing his ACL, but Williams said there was no pressure on Rodan to make a similar comeback.

“I’m sure our supporters will be excited to see David running around, but it’s all pretty measured and we won’t be pushing him before he’s ready,” Williams said on Wednesday.

“The doctors and fitness staff are working with guys who have had it [the LARS procedure] done in the past. Nick Malceski has had a lot to do with David getting back and I’m sure we’ll be covering what the Sydney guys did as well.

“But the fact is that each injury is individual and when David is ready, he’s ready. We know [the procedure] is not 100 per cent fail proof, but we’re very confident that he’s made the right choice and, hopefully, he gets a great result.”

Rodan and young gun Hamish Hartlett (hamstring) are the only two players likely to miss the Power’s pre-season campaign.

Midfielder Jason Davenport and recruit Cameron Cloke will remain on modified training programs after having shoulder reconstructions over the break.

David Rodan averaged 69.53 points as a midfielder in last year’s Toyota AFL Dream Team.
