AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou says the league remains on good terms with the AFL Players' Association despite claims it encouraged Jason Akermanis to write his inflammatory column on homophobia within the clubs.

Demetriou said the relationship between the two bodies remained very good, and would be surprised if it condoned Akermanis' views that a homosexual player would struggle to adapt if he came out.

"The AFLPA has been doing some marvellous work around IDAHO [International Day Against Homophobia], with the whole raising awareness of how people should be accepted, regardless of their sexuality or gender," he said.

"I think the AFLPA should be congratulated and I daresay they'd be disappointed with that article they saw yesterday.

"I'm not sure whether they were party to it or what role they played in it but I don't think it's a view they share."

Demetriou said Akermanis' comments, made in his weekly News Limited column on Thursday, were an unnecessary distraction ahead of Friday night's MCG blockbuster between Collingwood and Geelong that is expected to pull a crowd of more than 90,000.

He also said the feedback on the piece had been largely negative.

"I'm pretty sure we'll get another article or two written by the end of the year, which will be enlightening and controversial and hopefully not as embarrassing," he said.

"I think Jason is entitled to have his view, as people know. We live in a democracy but if you are willing to have a view, you must expect and accept that people can offer an alternative view.

"The amount of criticism and ridicule and condemnation of Jason's column yesterday are there to be seen.

"I think we've moved on, we live in the 21st century in a very inclusive community, and it's not a view I share and I don't think many people in the community support that view."

Demetriou said the League would not look to reprimand Akermanis for his comments.

"I think he should ask himself for a 'please explain'," he said.
