TEAM GWS has made its first official signings with Northern Territory youngster Curtly Hampton and NSW/ACT duo Sam Schulz and Mark Whiley committing to three-year deals with the AFL's proposed 18th team.
Culcairn midfielder Schulz and Finley defender Whiley both play in the TAC Cup with the Murray Bushrangers and have developed through the AFL NSW/ACT talented player program.
Hampton, an athletic forward/midfielder from Alice Springs, has impressed recruiters for a number of years after first playing at under-16 level as a 14-year-old. He played under Team GWS high performance manager Alan McConnell at the AIS-AFL Academy.
All three players have all joined Team GWS under the zone concessions afforded the new club by the AFL.
Team GWS has zoned access to players from southern NSW, ACT and Greater Western Sydney across the 2010 to 2013 national drafts, as well as players from the Northern Territory who will be eligible for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 national drafts.
It is expected the trio will be joined by rugby league recruit Israel Folau after the Brisbane Broncos confirmed on Monday morning that Folau would be leaving the club.
Team GWS chief executive Dale Holmes said the signings indicated the club's commitment to offering young players from its zone the opportunity to play at the highest level.
"What excites me is that these players see the potential of their future with GWS, and the support and welfare that we are building into this club," he said.
"The boys from southern NSW have elected to join GWS when they could have nominated for the 2010 draft.
"This is great validation of the work our football department are doing. It says to me that we are moving in the right direction and establishing ourselves as a genuine option for talented players."
Team GWS coach Kevin Sheedy said that he was looking forward to working with the three new recruits and further building a strong list for the club's AFL debut in 2012.
Hampton said signing with Team GWS was the realisation of a dream.
"This is all only really just starting to sink in now. It's been my life dream to sign with an AFL club and I have finally got there," he said.
"Alan McConnell was my AIS coach so we were already close and [Team GWS development coach] Brett Hand was my coach at the [NT] Thunder. I'm really happy that I get to keep working with them as they have already helped me so much along the way."
Schulz and Whiley both said they were excited at the prospect of working with four-time premiership coach Sheedy, as well as securing their AFL futures.
