TASMANIA has scored an upset win over NSW/ACT to claim the Division Two title at the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Both teams entered the match with 2-2 records, having beaten their fellow division two opponents but suffered losses against those states vying for the division one title.

However the NSW/ACT side had fared better in its matches against superior opposition and entered the match a warm favourite.

But Tasmania showed little regard for any favourite tag, careering away in the first half before eventually winning by 42 points, 13.6 (84) to 6.6 (42).

Matthew Armstrong’s side had to achieve its win without skipper and playmaker Josh Green, who left the field in the first term with a fractured rib.

But the likes of Rhys Mott (27 disposals, four clearances) and Jacob Gillbee (17, four clearances) stepped up in their captain’s absence.

Sam Darley, who enjoyed a stellar carnival, was also superb as he consistently won the ball and used it with precision either when transferring it from defence or taking it inside 50.

While that trio won plenty of footy, the Tasmanians rarely missed when they went inside 50.

Charlie Riewoldt, bother of Richmond spearhead Jack, enjoyed a great second term to boot three goals and the Tasmanians went to the main break leading 9.0 to 3.1.

NSW/ACT star Anthony Miles (18 possessions, seven clearances) lifted after half time and Kurt Aylett (14 disposals, five hardball gets) also tried to get his team back into the contest.

Key forward Josh Bruce (13 disposals, two goals) started to get his hands on the ball, but the Rams simply had too much ground to make up.

Tasmania led by 35 points at the final break, and when Riewoldt seized his chance to boot his fourth mid-way through the final term it was game over.

When the final siren sounded Tasmania celebrated its second division two title of the past three years.
