Brisbane Lions v North Melbourne

Match 1: Rd 17, 2001, Docklands
Brisbane Lions 21.10 (136) d North Melbourne 18.7 (115)

Brisbane Lions v North Melbourne Rd17 2001

After triumphing by 60 points in round two at the Gabba, the Lions travelled to Melbourne for the rematch. They were aiming for their eighth straight win, while the Roos were looking to regroup after being beaten by Essendon. North led at every change, and just a one-point gap at three-quarter time set the scene for a stunning final stanza.

The Lions then kicked six straight goals to the Roos' 2.2 to win by 21 points. Daniel Bradshaw kicked six goals, Tim Notting and Craig McRae four each, and Michael Voss and Simon Black led the way with 26 and 21 touches respectively. For the Roos, six goals from Saverio Rocca, four from Corey McKernan and 36 hit-outs from Matthew Burton weren't enough to save them.

Match 2: Rd 3, 2003, Docklands
Brisbane Lions 16.13 (109) North Melbourne 16.13 (109)

North Melbourne v Brisbane Lions Rd3 2003 Current-day senior coach Michael Voss starred for the Lions with five goals, 23 touches and three Brownlow votes, but couldn't quite steal victory at Docklands in round three of the 2003 season.

Voss kicked a last-gasp behind on the full-time siren to salvage a draw for the reigning premiers after two late Drew Petrie goals led a North Melbourne fightback.

An Anthony Stevens behind put the Roos in a winning position and then, as the siren sounded, Voss hammered the ball from 50 yards – but the shot was wide – and the premiership points were shared.

Digby Morrell kicked five for North and current Richmond assistant David King two while Voss' current assistant coach Justin Leppitsch chimed in with three for the Lions.

Match 3: Rd 4, 2007, Carrara
North Melbourne 12.15 (87) d Brisbane Lions 8.15 (63)

North Melbourne v Brisbane Lions Rd4 2007

As North Melbourne weighed up a permanent move to the Gold Coast, the Roos made it clear any potential local rivalry with the Lions would not be friendly with this gritty win. The Kangaroos played 10 games over three years at the venue while they mulled over the club's future, eventually deciding to stay in Melbourne.

Under-fire coach Dean Laidley admitted speculation about the move to Queensland was beginning to affect him and the team after a winless start to the year, but this was a breakthrough victory. The Lions got off to a poor start, conceding five goals to one in the opening quarter, but trailed by just three points at the main break.

They drew to within five points early in the final term but the Kangaroos kicked the last three goals of the match. Leigh Brown led the way with three majors, while livewire midfielder Daniel Wells kicked two goals and notched up 29 disposals. Simon Black and Ash McGrath kicked two each for the Lions, while Jonathan Brown was kept quiet, booting only one major.
