With the proof that injuries in key positions derailed our premiership defence,we had to rely on players filling in out of position, with the players available in the draft, there is an uncanny resemblance to some of the greats that have worn the brown and gold in the past, buddy and roughy need a hand in the forwards,we can,t burn them out early in their careers, picking a couple of tough forwards to learn from the best will see this team back to the best, backline was a problem,we were holding our own but with no confidence, the kids that were picked back there performed admirably and will be all the better for it,but, once again injuries cursed us,a couple of strong tall backs who aren,t afraid to back themselves is just the tonic we need,to every club in the afl,you are on notice, lap it up,when all the boys are back to peak fitness and injury free, you will know that we are BACK!

Hawkamania - 8:27 AM Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Our first selection should be a tall defender. People who say we should take cameron cloke or a ruckmen with our second pick are kidding themselves. Putt or Pattison look the only two in contention. Cloke is a dud. Second selection should be the best kid available. We can pick Maguire with our 3rd or 4th pick before Carlton punce on him with there 3rd. They wont take him with their 2nd pick. Pattison or Putt can be picked up later. Jesse Smith can be taken with our 4th after Maguire if necessary.

Ryan - 8:29 PM Monday, November 23, 2009
Why is anyone even suggesting Talia or Vardy? Both are garranteed to be gone by pick 20. Thinking that they will be there at 39 is completely stupid.
Hartigan, Josh Thomas, James Craig is who we should be hoping for..

jimi hawk - 8:13 AM Monday, November 23, 2009
our first priority should be a tall defender kyle hartigan or sean tighe then a back up ruckman max gawn or cameron cloke i think we need to stock up on some recycled players because we did take 3 17 year olds last year and this seams to be a week draft and weve only got late picks so why not try to get a matt maguire before carlton does and why not take a punt on a super talent like jesse smith you wont get anything better with the late picks we have

Ash - 4:27 PM Saturday, November 21, 2009
Max Gawn by the look of it has some nice tap work and his marking skills are really good. jayden cass is a very good player, for a lower order pick. we must target key defenders and a good ruckman would be handy. i think posibly chris bryan who was delisted by collingwood as an experienced ruckman

James - 2:13 PM Friday, November 20, 2009
They should target key defenders, possibly Hartigan or Talia if avaiable, must be over 193cm as we need a geniune full back centre half back. I would pick up a ruckman with 2nd pick, should be ok at pick 48 the likes of McMahon or Vardy, need to be around 200cm with some weight. I would pick up J.Smith in preseason draft, worth the risk. I would also pick up D.Putt with a later pick or rookie position, seems like a good kid, nice size and young, plenty of upside wouldn't be suprised if drafted if he is selected early next year. The Hawks team have to be very smart and insightful this year, hoping we pick up some quality kids.

jyeba - 1:03 PM Friday, November 20, 2009
jordan williams get on him for the draft!! tall, fast, skillfull, freak from echuca. will dominate.

Matt O - 5:24 PM Thursday, November 19, 2009
Hartigan seems like a chance. But I have to float some older names for the sake of it. We do have a young list, but the players I am going to mention have just been dumped from average clubs or have been replaced by older players (both of which the Hawks dont have)
Roe, Cloke, Pattison, Jesse Smith, Cameron Wight, Wayde Skipper, Dean Putt. All except Putt are multi position players, and would easily fill roles that we lack in. And isnt McGuire just a clone of Thomas Murphy (given Matty was a genuine star in the making back in what...06-07? )He would be a good fit with our zone and I would still prefer him on a 3rd tall instead of Murphy

Mitch - 1:38 PM Thursday, November 19, 2009
Hi Clarko, you guys are doing a magic job and keep it up - fingers x on injuries for 2010

maxxy - 12:45 PM Thursday, November 19, 2009
idiots who picked scully,he's 8th on the draft machine! way to wreck a good idea from AFL.COM perhaps next year they can lock a player like him in with the teams that have a realistic chance of getting him.

maxxy - 12:39 PM Thursday, November 19, 2009
time for the hawks to scrap that draft model pelchen always talks about as they have filled most positions, go for the best available talent as buddy and the boys will hit there prime in a few years we dont need any more chumps coming to the lineup.

Luke Smith - 9:04 PM Wednesday, November 18, 2009
Hawthorn could use Jordan Lisle in the backline he got on the all-australian tac cup team at CHB! But i want him up forward with roughy and Buddy!

me - 8:30 PM Wednesday, November 18, 2009
cameron cloke is a no. his useless. will Maguire be available at pick 39? I dont think age in the Hawks side will be a factor at all as we still have a young side and in 2-3 years i think we will be at our prime.

Luke Smith - 9:30 PM Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Hawthorn has to wait til round 3 so they will be looking who will be the best suited player for there pick we don't want a forward! We need a backman but not like the Zac Dawson that we know from Hawthorn.

We need someone who has a good height at about 193 a good weight at 88kg! Yes Kyle Hartigan if he slips to us, or choose Stopp, Talia will be gone in the first round, Sean Tighe looks recommendable and same as Tapp.
Then we will need another ruckman Nathan Vardy would go well if he slipped to us but he will probly go in the second round.
Then just keep stocking with other picks and use our last pick for Dean Putt! Then Smith in the Pre-Season Draft. In Rookie draft we should get Haydn Kiel back i liked his style of footy.
THE FIRST TWO PICKS ARE A MUST.
Go The Hawks! Thomas Kickett must gett a little bit taller and accept to come to us and play with us in 2011 with relative Buddy Franklin!

mick - 5:27 PM Tuesday, November 17, 2009
1st priority - Modern ruckman. Smart, mobile tap ruckman that can run off and become link in hawks running game (McMahon from Oakleigh or Fewster from Calder).
2nd priority - Gorilla tamer (Tapp from Qld or Milani from GC).
Third priority - Creative small pacey backman to play similar roll to Johncock from Adelaide (George Long from Port)
Throw in Colyer from Claremont - Quick, classy small midfielder like Brent Harvey and Manzone from Gold Coast to replace Mark Williams as clean half forward that makes good decisions and the hawks would have done extremely well.
Dont worry about the old blokes or players prone to injury there is normally a pretty good reason the clubs that got rid of them did just that. Remember compromised draft over next 2 years for GC and following couple of years for WS. Pick young blokes who can run and kick. Coaching staff can teach work ethic and accountability but skill and flair are harder to teach.

Andy hargreaves - 12:54 PM Tuesday, November 17, 2009
39- Callum Bartlett , 46 Jesse Smith, 57 Dean Putt, 58 Luke Thompson, 69 Pass, 70 Matt Suckling..... Pre Season. Cameron Cloke

matt howell - 12:24 PM Tuesday, November 17, 2009
we should go after a ruckman because we have a great young defender in jordan lisle, we should probably get hartigan if left at 39. but we should try and get a ruckmen who is solid and can hopefully play a few afl games next season, but we really need renouf to step up and some of our new draftees to stand up and push for senior selections. if we do this we should have a good year and be a competitive team in 2010 season.

Mark - 4:26 PM Monday, November 16, 2009
We don't need a young ruckman when we've got Lowden we need another exprienced back up Ruckman if Taylor or Renouf get injured plus with Maguire he played all year in the St.Kilda reserves and played Forward. Because of his injuries he has lost his pace

Will - 10:12 PM Sunday, November 15, 2009
A tough one, originally I thought Hawks were crazy not looking at Matt Maguire, but given we're already carrying so many injury prone players and just added another in Burgoyne to our list and intend to pickup Smith it's probably good to leave Maguire as one risk too many.

Hopefully Dowler can develop, and we can pick up two tall back prospects in the draft.

Dean Putt is someone not mentioned yet, X-Richmond ruckman who is training with us, and I think we'll take with our last selection.

Milne will probably be our first pick, unless we go for a more ready-to-go ruckman in Kurtze.

Then the midfield will round out the selections...with such late picks it would be an absolute guess as to whom will be available!

John - 4:32 PM Sunday, November 15, 2009
It seems that most Hawk fans want to pick matt maguire and I agree. He may have a few problems though but if he can get fit would be a great part of the hawks defencie, also what about camron cloke?

matt hogan - 12:52 PM Sunday, November 15, 2009
i agree maxxy. they gave up pick 16 as well for him. port got a ripper of a deal there if they draft right. burgoyne is a star with a ruckman like lade next to him, but hawthorn have two duds as there main ruckmen. james craig was all australian this year. should get him and delist taylor

tim black - 11:27 AM Sunday, November 15, 2009
Pick 39 should be the best defender left. Sean Tighe, David Astbury, Josh Milani or Kyle Hartigan would all slot in nicely. Why we would choose a ruckman is beyond me. We already have four on our list! We are just about covered after that in all areas so midfield pace has to be a priority in this day and age so callum bartlett could be handy as would Deon gordon, Byron Sumner, and maybe even Andrew Hooper. Rookie list a ruckman at best. Cameron Milne might be worth a shot.

RYAN - 3:02 PM Saturday, November 14, 2009
Hawks need to go for...
Josh Thomas - Fingers crossed hes still around, will be the dayne beams of 2010. Inside and outside mid who wins clearences.
Kyle Hartigan - I think will be still around at 39 so we should look at him. Tall marking key defender.
James Craig - Ruckmen at U18 but is not tall enough to play there in AFL. Hopefully we get at least one of Craig and Hartigan, both will develop into very good key defenders with craig probably ready to play AFL first.
Max Gawn - Very doughtful that he will be there at 39 but if he is i think that we have to pick him. A very good tap ruckmen that will hopefully play next year.
Then any decent tall delisted players and or Jesse Smith if he is availalable.
Do not pick Matt Maguire.. He cannot play defence anymore as he can't turn properly. At AFL level he will continuously get turned inside out. Murphy is an even better option then Maguire.
Go Hawks!

HAWKS FAN - 8:07 AM Saturday, November 14, 2009
Definitely Travis Colyer or Clay Beams for the midfield, but both may not be available by pick 39. For the ruck, Max Gawn will surely be gone by pick 39 so go with Angus Kurtze (is he a country boy because his name suggests it. Country palyers make great ruckmen) or ex-Richmond youngster Dean Putt. Don't know why Hawthorn didn't swap Mitch Thorp for Putt as it was obvious both have too much talent to be delisted but still would be and Thorp will end up at Richmond anyway because Richo has left and they need another Tasmanian with an ego to fill the void. As for a key defender or two, Sean Tighe or Kyle Hartigan will be the best bets.

So Hawks draft:
Pick 39: Travis Colyer if available or Roland Ah Chee as a back-up both Midfielders
Pick 46: Angus Kurtze Ruckman
Pick 57: Sean Tighe Defender
Pick 58: Kyle Hartigan or Sam Reid both Defenders
Pick 69: Pass
Pick 70: Matthew Suckling (elevated rookie)

Pre-Season
Dean Putt (Ruckman), Haydn Kiel (Midfielder) or Taylor Durea (Forward)

As for drafting mature players in the pre-season, no-one will go near Maguire due to lack of match fitness unless someone like Carlton or Freo have the daring to turn him into the full-forward both clubs are looking for. Smith, we might take him if Taylor Durea (a great young kid, nifty little forward) gets taken in the Draft which he probably will. Haydn Kiel, again a pre-season back-up or an outside rookie chance. Dean Putt, another pre-season reserve. He has experience on an AFL list but is still raw enough to be a good project ruckman. I can't believe Richmond let this guy go, especially with Simmonds in his twilight years and Pattison getting axed.

Trav - 9:42 AM Friday, November 13, 2009
I agree maguire or Roe ,for insurance, but we still need to look at long term. Reid, Hartigan, Tighe, Stopp, Hutchins, surely one or two talented defenders will be available. We can look to the other comps for a young developing Ruckman. We need to continue to look for speedy midfielders who have good foot skills. But we must rememberthat we have a good young list already we just need to top it up .In 2009 we had only four players play 20 games or more the least amount of all teams,Melb had 7,GEELONG 18 ,BULLDOGS 17.

paul williams - 3:10 PM Thursday, November 12, 2009
get matt maguire ,he's still a top line player who has managed a decent injury free season with the saints seconds.Look in the wafl or Sanfl for a 23yr plus established ruckman west perth has a handy guy who was runner up in sandover this year.

ronald - 2:46 PM Thursday, November 12, 2009
well the players the hawks will want be gone before 39, i think they will end up re drafting hayden kiel, giving up 9 for burgoyne was a bad move, but gibson is a positive move but we still need 2 defenders and fast ones especially if croad dont play much and guerra is always injured. jesse smith is a dud i wouldnt even be looking at him, maybe we might get lucky and get gary rohan at 39 but i doubt it

adam - 4:10 PM Wednesday, November 11, 2009
its funny reading some peoples wishlists - there is no way most of those players will be around by pick 39...

Hawthorn should aim for Hartigan (def) and Kurtze (ruck) - if they are lucky one or both of those could still be available...

maxxy - 3:08 PM Tuesday, November 10, 2009
cya thorp we don't need players with that arrogance! to walk up to tom harley and say"i;m ending your career today" what an idiot!!!

no9 for burgoyne hmmmm bad decision i think but i hope I'm wrong!

Tom - 2:39 PM Tuesday, November 10, 2009
Max Gawn all the way. I've seen him play, even though he has done his knee he will be the best ruckman since sandilans

Ive - 11:43 AM Sunday, November 08, 2009
Even though I am not a massive Mitch Thorp fan he was an outstanding junior and if he was injury free and had a slightly better attitude he would be playing CHB now. So not all to blame when we took him over Selwood.

No chance for either Scully or Talia, they will both be gone by the time we pick. Temel (big, tall, can kick and mark, loads of upside) but again I don't think he will be available at pick 39.

Real test for Pelchen this year - got to look at the players that may slip through to 39 otherwise grab established players. Need outside players with pace and kicking skills. Hence as per my previous post some of the indigenous lads would fit in nicely.

Its not all doom and gloom though - we grabbed three 17 year olds in last year's draft - (Shiels, Savage and Lounds) they would have been eligible this year also.

frewtang - 10:01 PM Saturday, November 07, 2009
I think hawthorn need a tall defender who can win the contested ball like Brian Lake.

HAWKS RULE!!!!!!!

domonic - 3:23 PM Saturday, November 07, 2009
39 fowler
46 collier
57 milne
58 mcginty

a goal kicking half forward in fowler a quick goal kicking wingman in collier and two ruckman in mcginty and milne

george - 2:43 PM Saturday, November 07, 2009
i am totally surprised there are people here clicking and choosing players like Scully, Talia, Fitzpatrick and Vardy. All these kids are 1st rounders, latest in second round, so how theythink they are going to last until pick 39 is beyond me !!!!!
Hawks need to walk away with the best avail KEY DEF and RUCK with their 1st 2 picks, simple as that.

Hawkman mick - 6:19 PM Friday, November 06, 2009
I think the Hawks need 2 tall defenders & a ruckman in the national draft.someone like Kyle Hartigan 193cm & Benjamin Stratton 189cm the 2 tall defenders & Angus Kurtze 199cm ruckman, all three sound very promising future prospects for the Hawks.if possible put one of the 3 on the rookie list so the hawks can get a ready made ruckman & Jesse Smith in the pre season draft to top up thier list,GO HAWTHORN 2010

Tony Crichton - 3:43 PM Friday, November 06, 2009
I think that Hawthorn's needs are as follows :
1. Ruckman eg McCauley 200cm
2. Tall Defender eg Hartignan 193cm or Grimes 192cm. Love to get Talia but we will not get him with our late picks
3. Pacy outside midfielders eg Roland Ah Chee
Agree with Richard, I knew that morning in 2006 that we should have drafted Selwood instead of Thorp. Please Hawks, get a good ruckman as No. 1 priority

richard - 1:37 PM Friday, November 06, 2009
Ruckman - Broc Mccauley
Onballer - Tom Scully
Forward - Serhat Temel
Defender - Daniel Talia

Please pick wisely Hawthorn Football Club lets not have another Mitch Thorp.

Keep your eye on Serhat Temel..! :D

Go The Hawks..!
:D

Ive - 12:22 PM Thursday, November 05, 2009
Interesting Draft looms. Still think the Hawks need to grab an established key back like a McGuire or MacDonald as Shoey still not ready.

Jesse Smith seems a certainty as late round pick number 70 and then look to grab a ruck in the pre-season draft

By all reports Hawks are mad keen on Deon Gordon from St Marys in the NT. Don't know if he will still be there at pick 39 though. Also should look to get another outside player with pace - Roland Ah Chee from SA would look good in the Brown and Gold.

Clearly we agree Maguire is our best option. Proven player, 5-6 years left, why not?

Jesse Smith and CLinton young to play 11 Games each, never together.. Should assist covering for the other.

Adam Pattison from Richmond couldnt hurt as a 2nd or 3rd Ruckman.

Rhan Hooper/Scott Harding/Jason Roe from the Lions. RH and SH to fill our crumbing forward hole as Rioli goes midfield, JR to fill our 3rd Tall back option. Would you prefer him or Thomas Murphy?

Gorilla - 6:12 PM Tuesday, November 03, 2009
There is no way Talia will still be available at pick 39 (Hawthorns first pick) but there are other tall defenders in the draft that look promising.

sam - 5:11 PM Tuesday, November 03, 2009
hawks should make this draft the get

matt mguire draft. he is to good to let slip to a nother club. he could be the difference between wining a flag or having a nother ordinary season. get matt maguire hawkas

olivia - 4:37 PM Tuesday, November 03, 2009
brent wallace is the best

jack - 3:59 PM Tuesday, November 03, 2009
hawthorn has low picks so in the draft meaning we will not get any good kids for the next 4 yrs.... with no defence and no rucks, it is enevitable
2010-2012 hawthorn spooners

dean - 3:28 PM Tuesday, November 03, 2009
experienced and proven defender. matty maguire to the hawks. enough said. do it.

tim - 12:51 PM Tuesday, November 03, 2009
i agree we need a strong man to hold down full back and matt maguire seems the perfect fit
so get maguire we need him

James - 12:46 PM Tuesday, November 03, 2009
Get Daniel Talia. He is a very strong backman.
and for the ruck i think Max Gawn or Mccauley or Kurtze.
Go hawks :)

ben - 11:05 AM Tuesday, November 03, 2009
yeah we need matt maguire he is the best defender going arond and just what hawthorn need down back. pick 39 or 46 wouldent be to much to secure him considering we took 3 17 year olds last year and this is considered quite a weak draft

garry - 7:10 AM Tuesday, November 03, 2009
i agree we need a key deffender and sean tighe looks big and strong enough to be a force as does kyle hartigan and i agree matt maguire would fit into our backline beautifuly. he could be the gorrila we need since no one knows when or if trent croad will be back and we should look at jesse smith. if he can get over hes injuries i believe he could be a star

hawks rule - 5:29 PM Monday, November 02, 2009
we need a key deffender kyle hartigan or sean tighe might be availuble and dont forget about matt maguire, hes only 25 and was one of the best key deffenders before he broke hes leg. we also need a ruckman broc mccauley or nathan vardy look allright as does max gawn. good luck hawks

ed - 1:46 PM Monday, November 02, 2009
what the hawks need is another tall defender daniel talia.
we also need a new ruckman broc mccauley

our lsit will be awesome next year with lots of our injured players coming back we just need the ruck

trav - 5:09 PM Saturday, October 31, 2009
Hopefully , we can pick up a ruckman and a good developing tall defender,I think we have a good list,so our longterm future should be looked at.

Katie - 11:42 AM Saturday, October 31, 2009
TAYLOR DURYEA is an AWESOME player!!!!
