Dons shank Caddy shot

By Callum Twomey 3:02 PM Mon 17 October, 2011

ESSENDON says if it had known earlier that the Gold Coast would only accept a top-10 pick for midfielder Josh Caddy then it might have been able to secure the deal.

The Bombers' push for the 19-year-old fell short on Monday despite an AFL mediator being brought into the equation to help form a fair result for both clubs.

Essendon CEO Ian Robson said the club was disappointed its combinations of offers - all including its pick 19 in the NAB AFL Draft - were knocked back by the Suns.

"We're really disappointed," Robson said.

Bombers set sights on Caddy

By Mark Macgugan 6:28 PM Fri 14 October, 2011

ESSENDON is believed to have launched a bid to lure Gold Coast midfielder Josh Caddy back to his home state.

The Bombers hope to trade for the Brisbane Lions' end of round one compensation pick, received last year for the loss of Michael Rischitelli to the Suns.

They would then offer that selection, plus their first round pick (No. 19) in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, to Gold Coast in exchange for Caddy.

Essendon assistant coach Mark Thompson alluded to the proposed trade at the launch of the club's sponsorship deal with Kia Motors on Friday.

"We're just trying to go under the radar and get something done quietly," Thompson said.

Gold Coast commits to O'Meara

By Jason Phelan 7:00 AM Fri 14 October, 2011

GOLD Coast has won the race for highly rated youngster Jaeger O'Meara with the Suns making a deal with Greater Western Sydney for the first pick in Monday's mini-draft on Wednesday.

The deal sees the Giants receive selection No. 4 in this year's NAB AFL Draft as well as Gold Coast's mid first-round compensation pick it received from Geelong last year (the Suns received that selection after trading pick No.15 to the Cats in last year's NAB AFL Draft).

As well as the first pick in the mini-draft, Gold Coast receives the Giants' round two pick (No. 31).

A bright Day for Suns

By Michael Whiting 12:05 PM Wed 12 October, 2011

YOUNG Gold Coast forward Sam Day has extended his contract until the end of 2014, quashing speculation he may be traded to Adelaide.

Day was chosen at No.3 in the 2010 NAB AFL National Draft and has been linked with a return to his home state in exchange for Crows forward Kurt Tippett.

But the 19-year-old key forward said he was elated to be staying with the Suns for a further three seasons.

"It's good to have it locked away and I'll just be able to put my head down and focus on having a good pre-season and getting better," Day said.

GWS up the ante on O'Meara

By Jason Phelan 5:14 PM Mon 10 October, 2011

GOLD Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft says it may take more than the Suns' fourth overall pick at November's NAB AFL Draft to secure Western Australian youngster Jaeger O'Meara.

The highly-rated midfielder is the marquee player available in Monday's mini-draft, with clubs needing to trade national draft picks, experienced players, or both to Greater Western Sydney in order to secure one of four mini-draft picks.

Gold Coast is aiming to trade for the top pick in the mini-draft and select O'Meara, and held discussions with the Giants during Monday's opening round of trade meetings.

Trade week: left at the gates

By staff reporters 5:03 PM Mon 11 October, 2010

ADELAIDE
The Crows were strongly linked to Carlton's Andrew Walker but no deal could be struck.

BRISBANE LIONS
West Australian natives Mitch Clark and Daniel Rich were linked with moves back home but nothing came from that and both should continue with the Lions next year.

CARLTON
Andrew Walker didn't get the clean slate he was after. Adelaide, Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs all expressed varying levels of interest, but he was left at the altar each time. Bret Thornton and Setanta O'hAilpin were also hoping to reignite their careers elsewhere, but couldn't find new homes.

Roos grab Richardson

By Katrina Gill 1:56 PM Mon 11 October, 2010

NORTH Melbourne has finally struck a deal to secure North Ballarat defender Cameron Richardson, with the club sending its round-two NAB AFL Draft pick 35 to Gold Coast in exchange for the promising 22-year-old.

Richardson was one of 10 previously drafted or previously nominated players pre-listed by Gold Coast, after starring with the North Ballarat Roosters - North Melbourne's VFL affiliate.

The 189cm half-back flanker was overlooked in the draft as an 18-year-old, after knocking back an invitation to attend the TAC Cup tryout session, which clashed with his first day of work at the local cinema.

WAFL star heads to Freo as deadline day opens

By Mic Cullen 10:11 AM Mon 11 October, 2010

FRESH from last year's success with mature-age selection Michael Barlow, Fremantle has taken WAFL star Tendai Mzungu as a trade from Gold Coast.

Fremantle has received the 24-year-old Perth Demons best-and-fairest and pick 44 in this year's NAB AFL Draft in exchange for their pick 38.

Mzungu is a running half-back who was apparently being eyed by both the Bulldogs and the Hawks before the Dockers snapped him up.

A good performance at the state draft screening at the University of WA, where he did well in both speed and endurance, helped get him over the line.
