Saints still face cap issues

By Jennifer Witham 6:03 PM Mon 17 October, 2011

ST KILDA has conceded it has some work to do before the end of the month to alleviate its salary cap squeeze after a Trade Week that did little to relieve the pressure.

The only moves the Saints made throughout the exchange period were the reluctant trade of untried Irishman Tommy Walsh to the Sydney Swans, swinging young forward Tom Lynch to Adelaide and picking up young pair Terry Milera and Ahmed Saad.

They also picked up NAB AFL Draft selections 25, 35, 37 and 68.

Maric moves in three-way deal

By Mark Macgugan 2:13 PM Fri 14 October, 2011

A THREE-WAY trade between Richmond, Adelaide and St Kilda has been completed with Ivan Maric now a Tiger and Tom Lynch a Crow.

The Saints received NAB AFL Draft pick 37.

Maric has been pushing for a move to Richmond and the deal finally came through for the 25-year-old, who has played 77 games for the Crows over six seasons.

A big body at 200cm and 102kg, Maric provides the Tigers with much-needed support in the ruck for Angus Graham and Andrew Browne.

"We were keen to bolster our ruck stocks with a more experienced big man and believe Ivan really suits our needs," said Richmond’s football manager Craig Cameron.

GWS rules out Goddard play

By Jennifer Witham 10:48 AM Fri 14 October, 2011

GREATER Western Sydney list manager Stephen Silvagni has put to bed suggestions the Giants will attempt to trade for Brendon Goddard over the next few days.

Silvagni said the only other business the Giants were keen to complete before Monday's Trade Week deadline was to secure Port Adelaide veterans Chad Cornes and Dean Brogan, and Brisbane Lions midfielder Luke Power.

Silvagni said Goddard was not on the Giants' immediate radar and said the club wanted to keep both the top draft selections it had traded for earlier this week, and the other nine it already had as part of the list establishment rules.

Saints facing uncertain futures

By Nathan Schmook 7:18 PM Thu 13 October, 2011

ST KILDA players Farren Ray and Zac Dawson have attracted interest from rival clubs, according to their manager Marty Pask, as the Saints' salary cap issues continue to leave uncontracted players in limbo.

Pask, who said he believes the Saints have up to 14 players currently without a contract, is working to secure deals for Ray and Dawson to remain at Seaford.

However, with St Kilda under AFL pressure to shed money from its salary cap, no deal has been forthcoming four days into Trade Week.

Valued stopper Sean Dempster, who finished third in the club's 2011 best and fairest award, and midfielder Brett Peake are other Saints yet to sign a contract for next season.

Saints land mature-age pair

By Luke Holmesby 11:14 AM Thu 13 October, 2011

ST KILDA has landed two mature-age players in a deal with Greater Western Sydney.

Terry Milera from SANFL club Port Adelaide and Ahmed Saad from VFL club Northern Bullants will join the Saints after GWS had the rights to them as they had previously nominated for the draft.

In return the Saints have downgraded their draft pick 20 to 25, giving GWS 12 of the first 20 picks at next month's NAB AFL Draft.

23-year-old Milera had a standout year for the Port Adelaide Magpies as a lightly-built small forward.

Saad, 22, only began playing football five years ago after spending much of his childhood living in Egypt.

Saints yet to re-sign Dempster

By Nathan Schmook 7:23 PM Tue 11 October, 2011

ST KILDA is yet to re-sign up to a dozen players, including valued stopper Sean Dempster, as the club deals with salary cap pressures that are dictating its Trade Week movements.

While the Saints have ruled out trading one of gun trio Brendon Goddard, Nick Dal Santo or Sam Gilbert to alleviate its salary cap pressures, a number of other players are out of contract two days into Trade Week.

Dempster, who has played in five Grand Finals and finished third in the club's 2011 best and fairest count, is joined by Brett Peake, Farren Ray and Zac Dawson in being unsigned by the club.

Saints pair '100 per cent committed'

By Michael Whiting 3:43 PM Mon 10 October, 2011

PLAYER manager Marty Pask said he would give St Kilda all the time it needed to offer new contracts to Zac Dawson and Farren Ray as speculation on the future of both players mounted.

Speaking on afl.com.au's Trade Week Radio, Pask said although contracts had not been finalised for either Dawson or Ray, both were required players and fully committed to the Saints.

Speculation on St Kilda's trade week moves intensified after it was revealed its salary cap was strained and head of football Chris Pelchen admitted the club needed to ease pressure on the cap.

However, Pask said talk of Dawson and Ray moving on was merely speculation.

Freo rules out Saints pair

By Luke Holmesby 3:19 PM Mon 10 October, 2011

FREMANTLE has no interest in recruiting St Kilda pair Farren Ray and Brett Peake despite speculation the Saints will have to off-load players due to salary cap constraints.

Ray and Peake are yet to sign new contracts with St Kilda, and speculation had linked them to Fremantle due to their West Australian backgrounds and relationship with former St Kilda coach Ross Lyon.

Fremantle football manager Chris Bond categorically stated his club did not have Ray and Peake in its sights but said there had been positive talks with the Brisbane Lions over getting Mitch Clark to Fremantle.

St Kilda to keep big names

By Jason Phelan 9:23 AM Mon 10 October, 2011

ST KILDA will use trade week to ease the strain on its salary cap, but the Saints will not be forced to trade out any of its star players, according to the club's head of football, Chris Pelchen.

Pelchen admitted St Kilda needed to use the player exchange period to provide itself with salary cap relief, but moved to quash speculation the likes of Brendon Goddard or Sam Gilbert would be sacrificed.

"Obviously we need some stability in terms of what we do with our TPP [Total Player Payments] going forward, but I wouldn't say to Saints fans that we're expecting to trade out a big name," Pelchen told trade week radio on afl.com.au on Monday.
