Trade winds: Roos to deal on Gibson?

By Katrina Gill 9:30 AM Wed 30 September, 2009
SPECULATION Melbourne star Aaron Davey will leave the ailing club is hotting up with reports the midfielder has been offered a four-year deal to join Essendon.

The Australian newspaper says the Bombers, who have cash to burn after the retirements of Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas, are willing to pay Davey as much as $2.3million over the term of the deal.

But the opportunity to play alongside his younger brother Alwyn could provide the biggest incentive for the talented 26-year-old.

It’s understood Melbourne agreed to grant Davey’s wish of a three-year contract extension, but the deal was never formalised and now appears on shaky ground.

The Herald Sun newspaper has gone as far to suggest that the Dees’ best player will walk out on the club if a suitable trade can’t be reached in next week’s exchange period.

The same newspaper reports that North Melbourne is prepared to part with defender Josh Gibson for Hawthorn's selections 25 and 41 but the Hawks are reluctant to part with the later pick.

Young Hawthorn midfielder Josh Kennedy could also be on the move according to The Age newspaper.

It’s been reported Kennedy, who is the son of four-time premiership player John Kennedy jnr and grandson of triple premiership coach John Kennedy snr, is considering a switch to the Sydney Swans.

Kennedy, 22, has been offered a one-year contract extension by the Hawks but could be lured interstate by the promise of greater opportunities and a longer deal.

Kennedy’s quest for more time in the midfield at Hawthorn isn’t being aided by reports tough onballer Jordan Lewis will remain at the club.

Port Adelaide was keen to secure Lewis as part of a trade for outgoing vice-captain Shaun Burgoyne, but the club has been told the premiership player is off limits according to The Age.

Carlton full-forward Brendan Fevola is also unlikely to feature in trade week according to separate reports in The Age and the Herald Sun.

It’s believed the Blues have been shopping the Coleman Medallist around since his drunken antics at the Brownlow Medal last week, but only the Swans have registered any interest.

In turn, Carlton has expressed interest in Swan Ed Barlow and the tall midfielder could feature in trade week if talks about Fevola progress, says The Australian.

Fevola was expected to meet with Carlton officials this week, but was yesterday seen boarding a plane with wife Alex and the couple’s two children.

The Age also suggests that Bomber Andrew Lovett has flown to Brisbane for talks with the Lions, who may consider trading midfielder Bradd Dalziell for West Coast's Brent Staker.

Adelaide ruckman Jon Griffin is also attracting plenty of interest from rival clubs, but is now likely to stay in South Australia according to the Advertiser.

MFC has just announced the signing of Aaron Davey for 4 years. A great result for club, player and supporters. The future is now looking great of the red and the blue!

Fantastic news that our BEST player has agreed to basically be a one club player by signing a new 4 year agreement. This is the tonic that the club, members and supporters have been looking for regarding the season 2010. Now we all need to sign up for the start of a new decade for us- Go Dees in 2010.

I think Davey will be better for both clubs essendon needing someone who can help score more goals with the retirements of club champions lloyd and lucas, we are also offering davey a huge deal and he will be able to play with his brother. On the other hand this will free up some money for melbourne fc and enable them to gain younger talent, realisticly even if melbourne keep davey Melbourne will never win the preimership whilst he is at melbourne.

if we can lure Davey to essendon, he would be suitable replacement for Lovett, they are both similar players but i think Davey would be a great asset to us and it would boost our speed even more

GO THE BOMBERS!!!!!!

If Melbourne let Davey they may as well give it up. What’s the point of getting good young talent if it is only replacing the older talent you’ve already had but you let go. The draft is to increase the depth with good young players, not to be a pseudo Gold Coast team with only players who have played less than 25 games.
They let Jolley & Scott Thimson go then Travis Johnstone, McLean, now Davey, – why not go the whole hog & offload, Sylvia, Rivers, Moloney, Bate & anyone else who has played more than 50 games but is under the age of 25?
On the other hand Robbo is given the flick when he is still good to play & wanted to stay.
Get Alwyn from Essendon rather than letting the opposite happen.
Melbourne is a joke if they let Aaron go too.

If Aaron Davey leaves the DEES i will not renew my membership with the dees, I bet the players did not like the way the coach was playin them in bad positions so we can get good draft picks... Well done Baily, get pick 1 and 2 and lose the same.. Wont be long and Jarrah will leave to. Have a look at what you are doin to the club before its to late!!!!

aaron davey would be a good fit for collingwood with his great speed and goal sense. come on pies, bring davey to collingwood

C'mon Bombers, jump at this opportunity to sign up Aaron Davey and reunite him with Alwyn, much to their mother's dreams! We must get Aaron, we have a history of missing the big name players, and I think Aaron would fit in perfectly at Essendon, and even improve Alwyn's game. Go Bombers, get Aaron Davey!!!

Jack Cassidy on 12:41 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

If Davey leaves then he'd better watch out for good 'ole Brent Moloney the next time the two teams play. McLean is already on his hit-list, & Chris Johnson is as good as dead, he can add one more. Moloney is a true club player, he will never leave Melbourne no matter what is offered.

colin Lowder on 12:25 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

MFC please don't let Davey go.
We are getting a great team for the future so a quality player like Davey should he go, would set us back bigtime

Davidm on 12:24 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

Why wouldn't Davey want to leave Melbourne who are anchored to the bottom of the table. Yes they will start to improve in the next couple of years (it's impossible for them not to with all the prime draft picks they have been given). The draft should be gotten rid of with free agnecy available to the players. All the AFL need is an adequately policed salary cap. This will sort out inefficient Melbourne clubs who the AFL have to keep spoon feeding and will stop clubs having to bottom out to be able to rebuild. The draft doesn't adequately compensate clubs who lose players to retirement.

This is a test for the administraton at MFC to secure Davey. He should have locked away a month ago, knowing that other clubs would be active at trade time. Off field performance is the basis for on field results so let's hope they have this negotiation under control. We are going to give up a likely captain for yet another untested draft pick.

Tom on 11:56 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

Davey is too important to our club. We are on the rise with players starting to turn into solid footballers. Hopefully in the next few years we can start to make the eight, but if Davey leaves the club, it may be a different story. He is a future leader at the club and best footballer at the moment. We need him in years to come.

josh on 11:37 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

i wouldnt mind the two davey boys at melbourne. But aaron has to stay.

Dean on 11:33 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

Davey will sign with Dees for 3 years. And to all these Essendon supporters thinking Lovett is in the same realm as Davey, you are very much mistaken. Davey is a class above Lovett.

Joel on 11:26 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

i would love the 2 davey boys to play together

Nathan on 11:07 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

Davey has to remember the support Melbourne showed him early in his career when no one else wanted him. I would lose all respect for him were he to leave now. Just not right.

Matt on 11:06 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

yes please josh kennedy! come up to sydney. we need a ball winning running midfielder with mcveigh to complement the hard heads of kirk and bolton, and jack so we can keep o'keefe in the forwards.

Kev on 10:58 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

Highly unlikely. Aaron is a role model for all the indigineous players on the side and is also a possbile future captain. Its possible he is just milking it to get a better deal from MFC, Davey is too passionate about the club to leave now, especially when the club is starting to get a quality side together

craig on 10:46 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

would love to have the 2 Davey's boys at the club. if lovett was to leave then that would be a fantastic replacement

Dan on 10:45 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

Ahhhhhhhhh no way!! As if, Daveys heart beats true to the red and the blue!!! We dont want Lovett or anyone for Davey, he stays!!

Steve on 10:42 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

Melbourne can not afford to lose Davey. A leader off the field as well as a role model for fellow indiginous players. Melbourne needs to ensure this trade does not eventuate. My son will be devastated if this trade happens.

graham on 10:42 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

davey better not leave melbourne. He is probably one of our best and most important players. I will be very dissapointed.

Lachie on 10:35 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

Suitable trade for both clubs? Get serious.
I would want lovett and hurley to give up Davey

Daniel on 10:22 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

I would have Davey in a second. He would be the perfect replacement for Lovett. At the same time, I would feel sorry for Melbourne as he is one of the keys to their future success.

Saka on 10:01 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

Why would Davey leave Melbourne? I know we are at the bottom but we won't be as bad as last year, Alwyn Davey didn't want to play with his brother a few years ago when he was offered to come to Melbourne so why would Aaron do that?

Tim Garth on 9:55 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 said:

I hope Davey comes to the Bombers - good replacement for Lovett and maybe a suitable trade for both clubs.
