Where's the club at? During a volatile trade week, Fremantle stayed true to its non-negotiable plan to rebuild with youth, securing two more selections in November's NAB AFL Draft. An influx of youth coupled with constant injuries led Fremantle to debut 10 first-year players in 2009, sending the rebuild into overdrive. The club finished 14th with six wins, but Stephen Hill, Nick Suban, Greg Broughton and Matt de Boer gave fans plenty to be encouraged by. Coach Mark Harvey says the club has prepared more than any other for the compromised drafts of 2010 and 2011, but it is still likely to battle for its wins in that period with a view to emerging in 2012 as a contender.
Trade gains Draft pick No.48 (from St Kilda) Draft pick No.49 (from Geelong)
Trade losses Brett Peake (to St Kilda) Marcus Drum (to Geelong)
The ones that got away At 22, Fremantle will be disappointed to lose key defensive prospect Drum, but the Victorian was given limited opportunities in his four seasons with the club. Both Drum and Peake had requested to be traded, so the club cannot be overly disappointed with its return given the prospect of losing Drum for nothing in the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft and retaining a disillusioned Peake. Chris Tarrant remains, as coach Mark Harvey and chief executive Steve Rosich insisted he would, but the club was unable to lure former Bomber Andrew Lovett into the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft.
What the club said “Having five selections under 50 in the National Draft puts the club in a sound position to continue our endeavours to enhance our playing list with young talent. It is firmly in line with the club’s list management model to build our playing list via the National Draft.” - football manager Chris Bond
What they still need Even before Marcus Drum was traded to Geelong and speculation mounted that Chris Tarrant would return to Victoria next year, Fremantle was short on key position players.
Adam Campbell and Daniel Gilmore have been delisted, while Ryan Murphy, who remains on the list, hasn't cut it as a key forward at AFL level. Antoni Grover and Luke McPharlin have been used in key posts at either end of the ground, but will be 30 and 28 respectively at the start of next season.
Harvey has spoken about the need to prolong captain Matthew Pavlich's career, suggesting a return to the forward line is imminent. He will leave a Fremantle midfield that is on the right path but far from complete. Rhys Palmer and Ryan Crowley will return to onball duties next season, but pace is required. A safe midfield option should still be Fremantle's priority with its first draft pick (No.4), with key position players the target thereafter.
Aaron Sandilands emerged as the AFL's dominant ruckman in 2009 and the club has high hopes for his athletic protégé, Zac Clarke. Kepler Bradley improved as a back-up ruck option through 2009, but a rookie ruckman would complement that group nicely.
Draft strategy: the big decisions Is promising young Western Australian Anthony Morabito the best option for Fremantle with pick No.4 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft? Particularly if a quality key position prospect is available.
After the success of mature age recruit Greg Broughton in 2009, how many late draft picks will Fremantle use on older players performing in the WAFL?

i feel as though mark harvey is a great coach and love what hes doing. Sure injuries have sped up the involvement of youngsters but we need to look into the future such as 3-4 years time and we will be a top 8 side for sure. It is just a matter of sustaining that consistency and building momentum
what should get get the is matthew panos be handy for us in the forward line help others out
we need a coach that can coach for once??????
Dockers definitely should go the youth route. We need a long term plan. Quick fixes and trading draft picks doesn't work, as our history shows. I think we cant loose with pick 4 this year (Dustin Matin or Moorabito) and from there I hope we pick class players who dispose of the ball well. (Bradley Shepppard pick 20). I then hope we use our third round picks to target three key position players and have a close look at latter developing players like White from Subiaco.
I've been a dockers fan since before I can remember, and after years and years of 'theres always next year' I can finally say that the Fremantle Dockers are on the way up. We have started a solid rebuilding phase which is how you make a premiership team. As you can tell, recruiting players from other teams to achieve short term success DOES NOT WORK and a winning team is a team that has grown & developed together.I feel that for us to have a successful crack at finals in 2011-2012 our best 22 for next year should be something like this:FB: Broughton Tarrant DuffieldHB: Mundy McPharlin DoddC: Johnson Hasleby SubanHF: Hill Pavlich HaydenF: Ballantyne Bradley MayneFoll: Sandilands Palmer CrowleyBench: De Boer Solomon Ibbotson Groverplayers like Sibosado, Pearce, Walters & van Berlo still need a bit of polish in the WAFL but they could easily slot into the team in place of players like Bradley, Dodd & Solomon. throw in a possible Morabito and another key position prospect and I can not see us finishing anywhere lower than 12, maxing at about 9. depending on how the other bottom teams restructure & rebuild
Well done Daz, my thoughts exactly, I remember a few years ago the geelong crowd were spitting on Mark Thompson and his chargers but now hes a god to them because the club gave him a chance. I am a mad freo supporter and wish we were in the finals every year but getting older players is what freo has done in the past and it has never worked. You would not make a great coach Matt, and a true supporter would see what harvey is trying to do for this team and patience is the key. we will have our time at the top with all these great skilled young blokes taking us there.
Fair dinkum Matt, but come on mate surely you must see that the only way to go is with the youth policy,we don,t need any stars coming to our club just to see their careers out.Now is the time to rebuild our club and turn it into a GREAT club ask yourself this question.....WHERE WERE GEELONG 5 SEASONS AGO.We have to give Harvs a real decent chance to build a team and then we will sit back and just maybe, with a little bit of luck and a great deal of hard work from our extremely talented group of young men,we will enjoy a period of dominance in the competition..GO FREO
I have been a massive freo supporter and will remain so, however I feel that the direction that we are continuing on with employing youth needs to be assessed. It is true that our on ballers last year in hill, ballyntyne, Deboer etc were great and were much needed given our year, the fact to that next season with Palmer back in the middle is going to give us even more. But when do we look at winning you say 2012, in fairness us as fans can not live in the 2006 moment for much longer. it may have been bandaid fixes, but I think we needed some genuine AFL senior talent the likes of hall, fev and crew. quit looking 3years down the road because stuff happens start looking at winning flags now.
