The exciting midfielder produced the best and most prolific of his 10 seasons at AFL level last year, finishing fifth in the best and fairest. Lifting his output in the absence of key runners Clinton Young and Rick Ladson, Bateman achieved career-high tallies of games (22), disposals (second at Hawthorn with 500, at an average of 22.7), goals (13) and tackles (56). Was fourth in the AFL after the minor rounds for goal assists (23) and equal second at the Hawks for inside 50s (91). Particularly consistent in the second half of the season when he didn’t drop below 21 disposals.

Draft history: 1999 National AFL Draft 4th round selection (Hawthorn) No. 48 overall on-traded by Collingwood to Essendon for Jonathon Robran and No. 40 (David Hille).
