They are the fresh faces of the Club and have only played a handful of games between them, but on Wednesday they were presented with the biggest challenge of their careers when they faced more than 500 women at the Sydney Swans QBE Ladies Lunch at Star City.

Rhyce Shaw, Mike Pyke, Kristin Thornton and Nick Smith were among the 19 Swans players who attended the annual event hosted by the always-humorous Adam Spencer.

For the ladies, it was a chance to kick back and relax with a glass of champagne and enjoy a complimentary massage, manicure and pedicure.

Swans co-captain Craig Bolton opened the event with a memorable speech and pleaded for the mothers, partners, friends and supporters to take it easy on the new players.

“This event has become a real mark in the female calendar, but definitely some of the boys note it in theirs as well. Rhyce Shaw is getting a massage and a manicure right now,” Bolton joked.

“But please be careful because this is an overwhelming experience for some of the younger guys, and trust me there’s nothing more daunting, more intimidating than walking into a room full of 500 women.

“Thanks to the women of the Club. In the past football has been dominated by men but this is no longer the case now with 46 per cent of members female, and we’d like to thank you.”

Bolton’s speech was a hit, setting the tone for a wonderful afternoon full of fun, delicious food and drink, and fantastic entertainment.

One of the most popular parts of the day was the Swan of the Century player pop quiz.

Three female guests were drawn from the crowd to be represented by Ted Richards, Rhyce Shaw and Mike Pyke, as the players answered game-show style questions in order to win fabulous prizes for the female contestants.

Ted Richards’ score of zero was cause for a few giggles, but the shock win by Canadian Mike Pyke proved he is more than just a pretty face. Each time Mike spoke, there was an audible sigh from the ladies in the room, and more than one comment about his “gorgeous accent”.

Adam Spencer was engaging as always in his first appearance as Ladies Lunch MC, but was disappointed to miss out on a pedicure or massage.

“This is the first ladies lunch I’ve been to and it’s great,” he said.

“I didn’t have time for pampering, but there was that beautiful moment when all the Swans players left and I suddenly became one of the ten hottest guys in the room,” he laughed.

The annual event was topped off with a special performance by The Leading Men. The four-member group have all had illustrious careers in musical theatre playing key roles in Les Miserables, the Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, and the Wizard of Oz just to name a few.
