DAVID Zaharakis has already fulfilled a boyhood dream and his AFL career is just four games old.
The baby Bomber played out every young footballer's fantasy on one of the biggest stages imaginable when he goaled in the dying seconds of the Anzac Day blockbuster in front of 84,829 screaming fans at the MCG to propel his team to a stunning victory.
"You do stuff like that about a thousand times a day as a kid, but for my first goal in AFL footy to be the winner on Anzac Day is just amazing," a jubilant Zaharakis said shortly after the thrilling five-point win over Collingwood.
"Being an Essendon supporter you dream about kicking the winning goal after the siren in any game, but to do it on Anzac Day is just unbelievable.
"I'm still kicking myself. It hasn't sunk in and I don't think it will for a while. I won't even sleep tonight that's for sure."
With less than 10 seconds left in the match and with his side a point down, Zaharakis made a split-second decision when the ball came his way.
"Nathan Lovett-Murray kicked it to me and I marked it on 50 with 30 minutes gone," he said.
"I thought; 'if I go back and kick it I'm not going to make the distance because I'll be kicking from about 55'.
"I thought; 'I've just got to kick it'. If I kicked a point it would have been a draw, but if I manage to kick the goal we win.
"I got tackled [after the kick] and went to ground, but got up straight away and saw it go straight through.
"A few of the boys got into me afterwards, saying like; 'what are you doing playing on with three [Collingwood] players merging on you?' But I was lucky I kicked the goal."
Zaharakis, 19, was Essendon's second pick (23rd overall) at last year's NAB AFL Draft and coach Matthew Knights agreed he had created quite an impression early in his fledgling career.
"It's an amazing start for him,” he said.
“He's an Essendon supporter, he got nominated for the Rising Star a couple of weeks ago and to come up with a clutch goal today in a big time moment is outstanding.
"His brother in arms, Michael Hurley, is reeling a bit because I don't think David will let him forget about it for a while."
