CAFA formed in 1989
OAFL ran under the banner of CAFA from 1989-2001
Australian Football started being played in Canada in 1989 with the formation of the Mississauga Mustangs and the Toronto Panthers. From those two teams a league of 8 has formed over the years. In 2001 expansion of teams to the Western Provinces has lead to a second competition. In 2003 saw the expansion Etobicoke Kangaroos and London Magpies in the OAFL while out west the beginning of the Fraser Valley Eagles took shape. In 2004 along came the Red Deer Magpies and Victoria Lions out in the NWPAFL. Development of the western competition and expansion into the East Coast of Canada is planned. Junior development plans include the introduction of the game into the school system and the eventual development of competitions at the school level.
