VERSATILE Hawk Brad Sewell will now be out of action for up to six weeks after the club announced he will require minor shoulder surgery.

Hawthorn released a statement late Friday afternoon saying the highly rated midfielder had consulted a specialist who confirmed the 24-year-old had ruptured the ligaments in the AC joint of his right shoulder.

“Once the specialist indicated Brad was likely to miss three to four weeks, the sensible option was for a surgical repair to deliver a stronger shoulder joint over a five to six week period,” general manager football operations Mark Evans said in the statement.

Sewell injured the shoulder during Hawthorn’s first loss of the season in Tasmania on Saturday against the Western Bulldogs.

He continued playing, but post-match diagnosis revealed the severity of the injury. The Hawks expect the 2007 Peter Crimmins Medallist, who played every game last year, to resume some training activity within a fortnight.
