A 10-GOAL loss six days after a 20-goal loss isn't the ideal way to head into the break, but West Coast Eagles coach John Worsfold was still preaching the positives after his team went down to Hawthorn at the MCG on Friday night.

West Coast was blown away in the last term, but after kicking the first three goals of the third quarter were within 19 points before the Hawks rolled over the youthful visitors.

Worsfold had said during the week his main goal for the game was to see greater effort and application, and declared himself happy with the effort shown.

"I was really pleased with their workrate tonight – really pleased," he said. "I thought it was pretty much at the level I would expect from them, where they're at.

"In the first quarter we missed a couple of opportunities to get a couple of goals on the board early, and that's where we've got to keep working hard, grabbing opportunities, because the really good sides hurt you on your mistakes, and they don't get hurt as much on their mistakes.

"That's pretty much the way I saw the game pan out tonight – they really capitalised on any turnovers we had, and their two big marking forwards were very good.

"You don't like to have big losses, but you're talking about the workrate, and that was up tonight."

Worsfold warned about the talent differential earlier in the week, but stressed his happiness with the endeavour.

"Looking at Hawthorn, up and going with their current side in and with our current side in, I would have thought there was a fair margin between the two sides.

"Exactly what that margin is, that's up for people to decide, but to me, the difference was the way they capitalised on their ball use, and we didn't.

"But the workrate wouldn't have been too far different."
