CARLTON big man Setanta O’hAilpin will travel to Germany to seek medical treatment from the same specialist who has helped two AFL players make speedy recoveries from injury.

O’hAilpin, the Irishman who was a rookie elevation at the Blues in 2005, is struggling to overcome a persistent calf injury sustained in round 15 and will seek further treatment from Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfarth.

Dr Muller-Wohlfarth assisted Richmond’s Mark Coughlan earlier this year and Geelong’s Max Rooke last year as the pair battled chronic hamstring injuries.

Known for his use of Actovegin – which is made from calf’s blood – Dr Muller-Wohlfarth is considered a world leader in the treatment of soft tissue sports injuries.

Carlton General Manager Football Operations, Steven Icke, said the Blues hoped the renowned sports doctor would help O’hAilpin overcome his injury in time for the start of Carlton’s pre-season schedule.

“Setanta and his manager met with myself and Brett Ratten this morning to discuss the options available to assist his treatment and recovery,” Icke said.

“We believe this is the best option available to ensure Setanta is able to fully recover from this injury.”

Icke said Carlton’s Club Doctor, Ben Baressi, had been involved with the discussions on the treatment options and has considered all avenues available.

O’hAilpin has played 46 career matches – including 12 this year – and has played a variety of roles since arriving at the club.

The Irish recruit is philosophical about travelling to Germany for treatment by Dr Muller-Wohlfahrt.

“It has been very frustrating and I am hoping my visit to Germany will provide the answers that will ensure I am ready for pre-season training in late October,” O’hAilpin said.
