THE BRISBANE Lions will unveil a new clash strip in Friday’s NAB Challenge match against Hawthorn at Southport.
The guernsey, to be worn only in interstate matches, contains more white than maroon on the front and back while sporting the new Lions logo.
Lions chief executive Michael Bowers said the design maintained a consistent theme in its guernseys for home and away matches.
“For the first time in our history, our logo and our jumper have sort of been linked,” Bowers said.
“We’ve come out with a really strong, new look for the jumper this year, which is the result of a new logo. The new jumper has spun off that.”
The new logo sparked legal action from the Fitzroy Football Club, which claimed the Lions were obliged to use the old Fitzroy Lions logo in perpetuity following their merger with the Brisbane Bears in 1996.
Bowers said that while the case is still before the courts, they are starting to understand more about the case, and it won’t affect the current jumper.
“Their (Fitzroy Football Club) concern doesn’t have anything to do with our jumper so there’s no need, in relation to court action, for any changes to occur with our jumper which is a good thing,” Bowers said.
“It will be interesting to see the supporters’ response, but we think the strong consistent use of the Lion is a good thing.
"The Lion has got that menacing, don’t-mess-with-me sort of look, and on the jumper we think it comes across really well.”
Lions vice-captain Simon Black has welcomed the design of the new guernsey, which will have its first official outing against Melbourne at the MCG in round five.
“I think it’s a marked improvement on the last one,” Black said.
“It’s a bit more distinct ... I’m looking forward to wearing it tomorrow. It stands out … (and) on the ground, you’ll have no trouble at all knowing who your teammate is."
