The Gabba is one of the few grounds known better by its nickname than its true identity, which is the Brisbane Cricket Ground. The Gabba, of course, comes from the suburb in which it resides – Woolloongabba.
The Queensland Football League played matches at The Gabba from 1905 to 1914, 1959 to 1971, and in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The AFL put Brisbane Bears at the ground in 1993, and when the team became the Lions in 1997, it remained the home of Queensland AFL.
The Lions, and Bears before them, who played some home games at the Gabba from 1991 before moving permanently two years later, have the extraordinary record of never having lost an AFL finals match at the venue.
