All the teams for Round 22 of the Smithy’s VFL.

North Melbourne will have to secure its Smithy’s VFL finals berth without the services of two of its best players of recent weeks after Dan Howe and Hugh Greenwood were recalled to the Kangaroos’ AFL team.

The 10th-placed Kangaroos take on 11th-placed Richmond at Swinburne Centre on Sunday with the winner guaranteed a spot in the Wildcard finals and the loser hanging up the boots for season 2023.

Tom Powell has also been promoted by North, while defenders Louis Butler (hamstring) and Nick Hodgson (ankle) will also miss, with Jackson Archer, Robert Hansen and Charlie Lazzaro returning from the top level to provide some pace.

Ex-Cat Nick Stevens, forward Ben Bath and Jamie Hope have also been recalled and North Heidelberg small Josh Hamilton will make his debut.

The Tigers have boosted their team with Jacob Bauer, Rhyan Mansell and Matt Coulthard returning from the AFL, Ben Miller back from injury and Matt Clarkson, son of North Melbourne coach Alastair, earning another chance.

Geelong star Cam Guthrie will play his first VFL game since 2019 when he launches his comeback from a toe injury against GWS Giants at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.

Guthrie, who will also be celebrating his 31st birthday, hasn’t played since AFL Round 6 and the Cats have decided to give him a run in the early game rather than on the hard surface at Marvel Stadium.

Geelong also regains captain Angus Byrne after eight weeks with a knee injury, young ruckman Toby Conway will have his second hitout of the season and Brandan Parfitt and Sam Simpson also return alongside club debutant Euriah Hollard, who played twice for the Giants last year.

Phil Davis returns for what could be his final game for the Giants alongside Ryan Angwin and Connor Stone, with East Coast Eagles youngster Josaia Delana winning a debut.

Jack Silvagni and Corey Durdin will return from injury to launch a bid for a spot in Carlton’s AFL finals team in the Blues’ daunting VFL clash with Gold Coast at Heritage Bank Stadium.

Silvagni has missed three weeks with a knee injury and Durdin has played just one VFL game in three months, reinjuring his shoulder in Round 18.

The Suns will unveil highly rated 2024 Academy prospect Leonardo Lombard, who is still only 16 but had 26 disposals for Queensland in last week’s Futures trial against Victoria Country, played a game for the Allies in the Under 18 championships and averaged 24.8 disposals for the Suns Academy in the Coates Talent League.

Gold Coast made nine changes altogether, with Darcy Macpherson, Sam Day, Elijah Hollands, Jy Farrar and James Tsitas all dropped from the AFL team.

Five Saints come in to boost Sandringham’s hopes of upsetting Williamstown for a fourth time in a row, with Anthony Caminiti to make his VFL debut and Jack Billings, Hunter Clark, Ryan Byrnes and Tom Highmore all included, while Tim Membrey has been promoted and Isaac Keeler managed.

Games record holder Ben Jolley is back after being rested from last week’s season-shaping win in Queensland, but Josh Pickess has succumbed to a knee problem which the Seagulls are still waiting to hear the seriousness of.

Werribee’s bid to pinch top spot off the Suns has taken a hit with underrated midfielder Jack Henderson ruled out of Sunday’s trip to Sydney with a knee injury, although Noah Lever is a more than useful replacement.

The Swans regain Ryan Clarke, Matt Roberts and Aaron Francis from the AFL team and Nick Shipley wins his spot back, with Jack Buller earning a second chance at the top level.

Essendon could unveil a son of a gun in its game against Coburg in the DSV Stadium double header on Saturday, with Luca Alessio, the son of former ruckman Steve, named as an emergency and considered to be a strong chance to come in when the AFL holdovers drop out.

Alessio, 18, is a well built 192cm player from Strathmore and would share his debut with 171cm teammate Carlos Egan, who has been picked as the 23rd man.

The Bombers have gone tall, with Nick Bryan, James Stewart and Sam Weideman all into the team alongside Will Snelling and Alwyn Davey.

Coburg has handed a debut to University Blacks VAFA tall Campbell Moorfield, 24, who played for Calder Cannons back in 2015-16, with Josh Watson and Charlie Beasley back from injury, but Tom McKenzie and Ingo Dammersmith going the other way for what is Lion Lachlan Walker’s 50th VFL game.

Collingwood regains 150-gamer Tom Wilson and defender Will Kelly for its home game against Southport, with Jakob Ryan earning an AFL debut and Neville Jetta omitted.

The Sharks have replaced Jay Foon with Corey Joyce in its only change as they prepare to celebrate 100 NEAFL/VFL games for Jacob Dawson and 50 club games for Dawson, Jesse Joyce and Brayden Crossley in their last game of the year.

Matt Signorello makes a surprise return to play his 50th VFL game in Port Melbourne’s season-closer against Footscray in the first game of the DSV Stadium double header.

Signorello had been ruled out for the season with a hamstring injury but has proven his fitness and takes the place of Aiden Fyfe.

Luckless Bulldog Roarke Smith returns from a foot injury for just his fourth game of the year as his team is also bolstered by Tim O’Brien, Luke Cleary, Riley Garcia, Arthur Jones and Harvey Gallagher, while Hugo Bromell has broken in for the first time this season in one of seven unforced changes.

Noah Answerth returns after six weeks out with a facial injury for Brisbane Lions’ trip to face Casey Demons on Sunday, with Kalin Lane and Jaxon Prior also included to help celebrate Tahj Abberley’s 50th NEAFL/VFL appearance, but Daniel Rich is out for a month with a hamstring.

Matt Buntine will celebrate his 100th NEAFL/VFL match for the Demons, who regain Ben Brown (knee) and Dan Turner (hand) from injury and Michael Hibberd from the AFL, with Brodie Grundy and James Jordon a chance to join them when Melbourne’s team is finalised, while Mt Eliza and Dandenong Stingrays’ goalkicker Ziggy Toledo-Glasman will make his debut.

Frankston has recalled two of its biggest stars for its final game of the Smithy’s VFL season against Box Hill Hawks on Friday night.

The Dolphins regain defender Joe Lloyd and key forward Matt Johnson – a late withdrawal for their win over Coburg last week, boosting their chances of signing off from 2023 with a monumental upset and two wins a row.

Frankston hasn’t beaten the Hawks since 2007 – the same year it last knocked off Coburg at Piranha Park, losing 16 games in a row following a draw late that year, and Box Hill hasn’t been beaten at Kinetic Stadium since the season before.

The Hawks will be looking to bounce back quickly after last week’s loss to Footscray left their spot in the top four on the line should they not be able to salute on Friday night.

They will go in without a quartet of key players, with Ned Long, Max Ramsden, Tyler Brockman and Jai Serong all being left out of the team with Hawthorn not set to play in the AFL until Sunday.

Seamus Mitchell returns from injury and Bailey Macdonald has been dropped from the AFL, with Lachie Wynd and Kye Agosta also earning recalls.

We will also see three field umpiring debutants, with Jake Edgar in charge of the Suns v Blues game, Brad Stewart in control of the Swans v Tigers and Ian Herman officiating the Zebras v Seagulls.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL season are live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. This week’s game will be Richmond vs North Melbourne.
