UNTRIED Gold Coast defender Harrison Wigg will miss the season after rupturing the ACL in his right knee on Thursday morning.

Wigg crumbled to the ground in what appeared an innocuous incident in the opening quarter of the Suns' intraclub match at Metricon Stadium.

He walked off unassisted but did not return.

The 22-year-old is entering his second season with the Suns after being traded from Adelaide and was part of the team's best backline in the scratch match.

It's the second horror injury for Wigg since heading to Gold Coast after fracturing his ankle during last pre-season.

He had slimmed down significantly this pre-season and was in contention to play his first senior game early in the year.

It's a blow to Fantasy players with the $170,000 backman the second-most popular defender with over 36 per cent of teams currently owning him.

"It’s really unfortunate for Harrison, he had an injury interrupted season with the club last year, but had put together a really strong pre-season," football manager Jon Haines said.

"We know he’ll approach his recovery with the professionalism he has shown this pre-season and we look forward to seeing him back up and running."

Wigg's injury comes just a week after Josh Schoenfeld required surgery on an ankle.

VFL recruit Josh Corbett has also been sidelined with a knee problem but is expected to be back prior to round one.

With a number of high-profile players rested from the intraclub, Callum Ah Chee starred, showing clean hands and exquisite skills in the humid and slippery conditions.

Jarrod Witts, Pearce Hanley, Rory Thompson and Anthony Miles were among those rested but will all play against Brisbane in a practice match on February 23.
