The Smithy’s VFL teams for Round 9.
Smithy’s VFL clubs across the league are smiling with a host of big names coming back from injury this week, but a couple are reeling from the opposite news.
Dion Prestia, Darcy Parish, Callum Coleman-Jones, Orazio Fantasia, Tylar Young, Jesse Dattoli, Jacob Heron, Ryan Sturgess and Misilifi Faimalo are all back in, but Tom Highmore and Elliott Himmelberg received the worst possible news.
Richmond and Essendon will welcome long-term guns back from major injuries for their Smithy’s VFL Dreamtime at Frankston contest at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night.
Injury-riddled triple premiership midfielder Dion Prestia will make his VFL debut after finally overcoming a series of soft-tissue injuries, while Tylar Young is back from an ACL injury suffered in the corresponding game at the MCG last year.
It will only be Prestia’s second State League game of his career – the other came in the NEAFL for Gold Coast way back in his debut year of 2011.
The Bombers, meanwhile, have Darcy Parish finally playing his first game of the season after off-season back surgery and a calf injury that delayed his return by a month. It will be his first VFL appearance since Round 14, 2018, which ironically also came against the Tigers.
Dylan Shiel, Saad El-Hawli, Zak Johnson and SSP train-on Will Hoare also return for Essendon, with Jayden Laverde, Matt Guelfi and Angus Clarke promoted, Nik Cox back in concussion protocols and youngster Jayden Nguyen out for seven weeks with a foot injury.
Prestia and Young will be on managed minutes and joined in Richmond’s team by vice-captain Joel Garner and Austin Johnson, with Maurice Rioli and Campbell Gray in the AFL team and Tom McCarthy rested ahead of Wednesday’s mid-season draft in which he is tipped to be an early pick.
Port Melbourne has been rocked by the news star intercept defender Tom Highmore will miss the rest of the season with a serious shoulder injury.
The Borough are back on the move, taking on the GWS Giants at Albury Sports Ground in the first VFL game on the Border since the Murray Kangaroos days more than two decades ago, but they’ll do it without Highmore, who was hurt in last week’s narrow win over Geelong.
In better news, one-game Western Bulldog Charlie Clarke will step back into State League football after rediscovering his passion at Port Melbourne Colts in the early part of this season.
Young forward Luca Alessio is in concussion protocols and former AFL players Ned Cahill and Will Martyn were dropped.
The Giants are on the rebound from their first loss of the season and made six changes, with Wangaratta Rovers key defender Jace McQuade to debut alongside fellow locals Jaiden Butson and Perry Lewis-Smith, while fellow Border products Nick Madden, Nathan Wardius and Phoenix Gothard will also line up.
Gold Coast will be without key forward recruit Elliott Himmelberg for the rest of the year after he tore his ACL in the Suns’ horror loss to Box Hill Hawks last week.
Himmelberg arrived from Adelaide to provide forward depth but hadn’t been able to break into the AFL team before being hurt in the second quarter of the 14-goal hammering.
The Suns have named four debutants, with Academy trio Max Hudson, Sam Wundke and Lachlan Cramp added to the list this week, while Jamison Shea will become a four-club player after stints with Footscray, Southport and Brisbane Lions.
Max Knobel out with a long-term foot injury, Caleb Graham and Lewis Johnston are also hurt and Ethan Read promoted to face Sandringham at RSEA Park on Sunday.
The Zebras included Rising Star nominee Hugo Garcia, Arie Schoenmaker, Lance Collard and Gus McLennan, while Misilifi Faimalo returns from a shoulder injury suffered in Round 2. Zak Jones, Hunter Clark, Isaac Keeler and Hugh Boxshall answer the St Kilda call.
Box Hill Hawks and Brisbane Lions also have several stars returning to action for their game at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday.
The Hawks regain Sam Frost, Calsher Dear and Bailey Macdonald from AFL duties but lose livewire Matt Hill for a month with an ankle injury, while captain Cal Porter has been rested and first-year key defender Noah Mraz is in concussion protocols.
The Lions swap one knee comeback star for another with Tom Doedee returning from a rest and Keidean Coleman having his own week off, with Conor McKenna back from the AFL and Bruce Reville, Shadeau Brain and Curtis McCarthy back from injury, while Deven Robertson has received a call-up.
Callum Coleman-Jones makes his comeback from an achilles rupture when North Melbourne meets Collingwood at Victoria Park on Sunday.
The tall hasn’t played since being hurt in the AFL in Round 3 last year, so his return has been a long time coming as the Kangaroos take a conservative approach with their key tall.
Zane Duursma and Bailey Scott return from the AFL team, with Zac Fisher going up and Matt Whitlock in concussion protocols.
The Magpies regain Wil Parker but lose Will Hayes to the AFL and Tew Jiath to injury.
Southport has been boosted by the return of Big V representative Jacob Heron from a hamstring injury for its elimination final rematch with Frankston at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.
The Dolphins, who scored 103 points and still lost by 15 goals in that historic final, have swapped key forwards, with Lachlan Sharp replacing Clayton Gay.
Coburg regains key rebounder Ryan Sturgess as it aims to push into the Smithy’s VFL top 10 for the first time in years against struggling Sydney at Barry Plant Park on Sunday.
The Lions are 11th after three wins in four weeks and take on a depleted Swans team on a four-match losing streak and losing Callum Mills, Taylor Adams and Hayden McLean to the AFL, while Lachie Hunter is unavailable.
First-round draft pick Jesse Dattoli will make his long-awaited debut after overcoming a pre-season stress reaction in his back, while Caleb Mitchell is back from illness.
Williamstown has been boosted by the returns of star midfielders Riley Collier-Dawkins and Jack Toner to meet Carlton at IKON Park on Saturday.
Toner has served a three-week suspension and Collier-Dawkins was a late withdrawal for the win over Footscray last week.
Orazio Fantasia has overcome a calf injury to play his first game of the season for the Blues, who have also added AFL omissions Marc Pittonet and Francis Evans and carryover emergency Lucas Camporeale. Meanwhile, Sam Docherty and Harry O’Farrell go up and Will Hayes is managed again at this stage.
Casey Demons have been boosted by the return of forward Tom Fullarton and midfielder Bailey Laurie to meet Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval on Saturday, although star defender Jake Lever has returned to Melbourne.
Bullants star Paddy Fairlie, a late withdrawal from the Battle of Bell Street with illness, returns to the team in place of Brody Glenn, while Blackburn’s Jarrah Salmon will debut among their five changes.
Geelong fans heading up the highway will enjoy a heartwarming sight when veteran star Cam Guthrie and recruit Jack Martin make their returns from long-term injuries in the Smithy’s VFL clash with Footscray at Mission Whitten Oval on Friday.
Guthrie, 32, has played just 10 matches at AFL level since the start of 2023 due to an ongoing achilles injury to be stranded on 240 games, with his only appearance since Round 10 last year coming in the Cats’ VFL semi-final loss to Southport in September.
Martin, 30, crossed to the Cattery from Carlton as a delisted free agent at the end of last year but has been hampered by a calf injury and is yet to play for his new club, but both he and Guthrie will get some all-important match practice on managed minutes.
The Cats have also recalled captain Dan Capiron after he was rested last week, along with travelling emergencies Mitch Knevitt and Oli Wiltshire, while Tobyn Murray and Kobe George also return. Jhye Clark is in concussion protocols.
Liam Jones will return from a calf injury for the Bulldogs to replace the promoted Oskar Baker, while 29-year-old Matthew Belbasis, a 2018 premiership player with West Preston-Lakeside, comes in for his second game after being a late inclusion to debut against Casey Demons a fortnight ago.
Teams for all Coburg vs Sydney Swans, Northern Bullants vs Casey Demons and Sandringham vs Gold Coast Suns will be published after 5:00pm.
