GREATER Western Sydney star Tom Green has suffered a suspected ACL injury at training on Friday.

Green was seen holding his knee after getting caught awkwardly in a tackle during the Giants' match simulation session.

The Giants onballer is set to have scans, but GWS is fearing the worst.

"Our medical team has assessed. Unfortunately, they're confident that it's an ACL injury," Giants football boss Jason McCartney said on Friday.

"It's looking like a worst-case scenario, but we're fingers crossed, we're hoping for the best.

"He (Green) was in shock, like the coach, myself, and most of his teammates are trying to find out what was going on.

"He's reasonably upbeat, Tom, but it'll take a while to sink in, I'd imagine."

Green averaged 29.7 disposals, 8.5 clearances and 3.6 tackles last year, winning the Giants' best and fairest and playing 20-plus games for the fourth consecutive season.

The Giants are already set to be without Josh Kelly (hip) for most of the season.

Speaking to AFL.com.au, coach Adam Kingsley backed recruit Clayton Oliver to recapture his best form, and had no concerns about the midfielder being able to combine with Green.

"I see no reason why he can't [get back to his best]," Kingsley said.

"Physically, he looks like he's in really good shape. He'll give himself every chance. Even near his best, it's certainly going to be helpful for us.

"But we don't talk about getting back to your best or anything like that, it's about putting yourself in a position physically and mentally to perform at your best and contribute to the team. So far across the course of one pre-season, that's what he's done for us.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing how that all comes together for our team against opposition. It's pretty exciting. But he won't be the finished product at the start of the season, either. He'll have to learn his new teammates, adapt to the way that we play … it's slightly different to how Melbourne played, for instance. He'll have some learning to do. But I'm pretty excited about what he could potentially be for us."
