IMPORTANT Western Bulldogs recruits Josh Bruce and Alex Keath have been handed the old guernsey numbers of two of the Dogs' retired premiership heroes.

Key forward Bruce, who donned No.47 at Greater Western Sydney and No.27 at St Kilda, has been assigned the No.17 previously worn by fellow spearhead Tom Boyd, who almost won the Norm Smith Medal after an influential three-goal performance in the 2016 Grand Final against Sydney.

Defender Keath wore No.42 at Adelaide and has been given the same number at Whitten Oval after Liam Picken hung up his boots.

The Bulldogs also handed guernsey numbers to their draftees Cody Weightman (No.19, formerly Lukas Webb's), Louis Butler (the No.18 of premiership defender Fletcher Roberts) and Riley Garcia (the No.38 of club great and new development coach Dale Morris, who will help the youngster return from a knee reconstruction).

Meanwhile, star West Coast recruit Tim Kelly will be keeping the No.11 he wore at Geelong when he runs out in his new colours.

The number has plenty of history at the Eagles, with former Brownlow medallist Matt Priddis and two-time premiership hero Ashley McIntosh previous owners.

West Coast's first pick at this year's NAB AFL Draft, Callum Jamieson, will take the No.40, while Ben Johnson and Anthony Treacy will start their careers in No.38 and No.43 respectively.

And Essendon has handed former Brisbane Lion Tom Cutler the No.12 guernsey.

2017 Richmond premiership player Jacob Townsend will wear No.20, while the Bombers' first draft selection Harrison Jones inherits No.23.
