DESCRIBING his emotions as "mixed" following Sydney's emphatic 53-point win over North Melbourne on Sunday, Swans coach Dean Cox praised his side's unwavering focus and squad depth to cap off a tumultuous week.

The victory followed five changes forced by season-ending club suspensions issued to Riley Bice, Nick Blakey, Isaac Heeney, James Jordon and Chad Warner for behavioural breaches. In their place, Harry Cunningham, James Rowbottom, Angus Sheldrick, Caiden Cleary, and Tom Hanily were recalled to the senior side.

With players and staff visibly emotional post-game, Cox reflected on the challenging lead-up.

"Probably mixed emotions," he told reporters afterwards.

"The ability to be able to turn our attention the last day or two to our football program and try to prepare our players the best way we possibly can with the start of the week that we had to work our way through was probably the most pleasing thing I found out of the days - the way that they responded, the energy they had. And to play the brand of footy we were after was great."

When asked about supporters leaving the SCG before the match in protest, Cox took an empathetic stance, apologising while respecting how fans process their emotions differently.

"Like I said ... to our players and to the media: everyone's emotions are different in how they show up, and we understood that," he said.

"So, for my part, I said, 'I'm sorry for putting everyone through this, and we'll do whatever we can to get their trust back'."

Cox praised the depth of his squad after several young players stepped up to deliver.

He stressed that success relies on a total group effort rather than a select few stars, explaining that the club's ethos centres on "the collective" and that it is "our squad that's going to do it".

"They came in and played just the way we expected them to," Cox noted, adding that consistency and dependability are what he values most.

"I think that's all you can ask for as a coach - you know exactly what you're going to get with some of them."

Cox said key defender Justin McInerney "might be a little bit short" for Sydney's first qualifying final, while Hayden McLean remains sidelined due to concussion protocols.

However, Cox offered a positive update on Lewis Melican who "did a full session" on Sunday alongside strong performances in the reserves, and said he has full confidence in the current lineup.

"I thought tonight, our team and the group we put out there performed really well," he said.

"I'm not really worried about what people think about our football club in relation to how far we can go.

"Everyone is entitled to opinions, and what we've got to control is how we know we can play ... I don't see this team being in a position where we don't think we can win our first qualifying final."

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson warned the rest of the League that writing off the Swans is a dangerous mistake.

"Anything can happen in finals," Clarkson said post-match.

"If you've got a desire like they demonstrated today, then good luck to anyone that takes them lightly. The whole football world has pretty much written them off, and that's when the Sydney Swans are at their most dangerous ... So, I'd be writing them off at your peril."

Clarkson admitted his Kangaroos were thoroughly outplayed by a hungrier opponent whose superior work rate made the difference.

"Their desire to compete in the contest and then spread beyond that made it look, at different stages, like they had an extra couple of players on the ground," he said.

"That is full credit to them. They had a hell of a lot to play for. Their backs were against the wall as a side ... All we can put it down to is that they were a lot harder and had a greater desire than we did.

"It genuinely looked like they had something to play for - because their season's still alive - and that we didn't. We rallied at different stages, but we hardly ever got the game played on our terms."

Putting a full stop on North Melbourne's 2026 campaign, Clarkson expressed deep disappointment in his side's flat final performance, accusing his players of mentally checking out for the off-season and wasting weeks of promising momentum.

"We were so disappointed with our performance," he said.

"We played like a side that was just looking forward to having three or four months off.

"We were really hoping to finish the season on a good note. Our form over the last four or five weeks, without necessarily winning, has been strong, and we just let ourselves down today."
