WITH their backs against the wall, a ruthless Sydney side has earned a week off and a home preliminary final after surging to a 53-point victory over Brisbane in a fiery qualifying final at the SCG on Saturday evening.

A dynamic forward trio led the charge, with Logan McDonald bagging six goals, while Charlie Curnow and Tom Papley booted five majors each, as the Lions were comprehensively beaten in all facets of the game, falling 21.15 (141) to 13.10 (88).

What began as warm and sunny conditions with a swirling wind quickly gave way to wild gusts and pelting rain, forcing both teams to capitalise on their opportunities before the elements took over.

The Swans faced a major test of their depth against the two-time reigning premier Lions. 

Already stripped of five key players following club-imposed suspensions after round 23 – with Isaac Heeney, Nick Blakey, Chad Warner, Riley Bice, and James Jordon sidelined for breaching club standards – Sydney was dealt another crushing blow early. 

Captain Callum Mills suffered a serious right knee injury while trying to change direction on the boundary and, unable to put weight on his leg, was helped off by trainers and ruled out for the remainder of the match.

The Swans dominated territory, winning the inside-50 count 69-52 and getting the upper hand in the clearances 45-35. Crucially, Sydney remained incredibly efficient going forward, converting 55.1 per cent of its entries compared to the Lions' 48.1.

In the first qualifying final of his career, Curnow stood tall alongside Papley and McDonald to set the pace on the scoreboard.

There was an early injury concern for Papley after the star forward appeared uncomfortable while speaking with trainers before heading into the rooms during the warm-up. However, those fears were quickly dispelled as he ran back out with his teammates. He finished with 16 disposals, three tackles, two clearances and 5.1.

Errol Gulden was equally influential, collecting a goal, a game-high 34 disposals, a game-high 915 metres gained, four tackles, and a game-high eight clearances.

For Brisbane, Oscar Allen led the way with four goals, while Dayne Zorko fought hard with 26 disposals.

Curnow broke the early deadlock with a towering contested mark up the ground, sparking a slick coast-to-coast transition for McDonald's opener. Moments later, Curnow outmuscled Darcy Gardiner to snap a goal of his own, capping a clinical defensive-50 chain for Sydney, which generated four inside 50s and 13 points from eight defensive rebounds early.

Eric Hipwood finally slotted Brisbane's first major 13 minutes in, but Sydney answered instantly. Papley crumbed and snapped truly, before he and McDonald both booted their second majors. However, a late kick-in error gifted Levi Ashcroft a goal on the quarter-time siren, cutting the margin to 26 points.

Tom McCartin dropped a defensive mark to open the second quarter, allowing Allen to swoop in and snap a goal before adding a second six minutes later. Sydney countered through Hayden McLean, who capitalised on a costly Jarrod Berry turnover off a throw-in for an easy major. Curnow then bagged his second, again outmuscling Gardiner for a mark inside 50 to swing momentum back.

As the wind picked up and rain set in, McDonald slotted his third before McLean added his second, sending Sydney into the main break with a commanding 30-point lead.

Josh Dunkley, one of the Lions' best in the first half, opened the third quarter with a goal, but a rapid response out of the centre square allowed Papley to snap his third. It highlighted the Swans' dominance at the stoppages, having made the most of an 11-4 centre-clearance advantage.

With Brisbane lifting, Allen got a free run and jump to slot his third major. However, Sydney continued to keep the Lions at arm's length when a high-contact free kick against a frustrated Harris Andrews gifted McDonald his fourth goal.

From there, Papley's fourth and fifth goals kept the scoreboard onslaught rolling. Although the Lions briefly fought back to trim the deficit late in the term, Sydney responded ruthlessly; kicking five of the next six to take a commanding 46-point lead into the final break.

As the goals continued to flow in the fourth quarter, Sydney began to rest key players in the closing stages.

With the win, Sydney has earned a week off and will host Fremantle or Geelong in a preliminary final in two weeks' time. Meanwhile, Brisbane will host Adelaide or the Western Bulldogs in a semi-final next week.

Skipper injured as Sydney's selection woes compound
In a devastating early blow, Sydney captain Callum Mills was forced off in the first quarter after his right knee collapsed while changing direction on the boundary. Unable to bear any weight on the leg, Mills needed assistance from trainers to leave the field and was promptly ruled out for the match. His injury triggered an immediate reshuffle, with Jake Lloyd floating back to fill the void. Losing their skipper compounds an already massive task for the Swans, who entered the final severely depleted following five club-imposed suspensions.

Papley cashes in after controversial rushed behind 
Following a long kick toward goal from Logan McDonald, Jaspa Fletcher was pinged for unnecessarily rushing the footy through in the first quarter. The SCG erupted as the contentious call added fuel to the fire, allowing Tom Papley to step up, take the free kick, and cash in to keep Sydney's relentless early siege rolling.
